Don't store a phone number as a number type (integer or otherwise). It's actually part of the arrangements for our national secondary school course over here (Scotland). We specifically teach pupils to use a text field type for phone numbers.

Using integer would strip any leading zeros from the number, rendering area codes - or indeed country codes with a leading double-zero - impossible to store.

The rule I go by is to think that what you're going to do with a value stored. Are you going to do anything mathematical with it? Find an average? Sort from largest to smallest? Use it in a calculated field? Then use integer or similar. If it's just going to be displayed as entered (perhaps using some specific layout, i.e. string handling) then use a text field type.
