Yeah this is meant for the US i geuss. In Europe especially STEMa masters is 2 years which a thesis is mandatory not optional. And even to enroll in to a Phd a master js generally a prerequisite.

Grade requirement is different too. You need to keep 3.0 gpa or above to get master’s but min 3.5 in PhD. And you have to pass qualifying exams and dissertation oral defense.

I graduated master degree in physics. I did similar to what PhD did except it need less number of publication to graduate. My program wasn't focus on coursework much, it was intense because it was summary of all course work in bachelor degree in one year but I didn't feel I become more specialize about that. Sometimes I think I have chosen a wrong program.

How long did it take you to get your PhD without counting your undergraduate and master degree?

In engineering you can either do regular masters or you can go for master in research, which was similar to how phD goes but but with less publications and a thesis which can be further worked on if you choose to go for phD.

Don’t masters also let you be a professor at community colleges or otherwise at a university but in a limited setting, while PhDs get full contracts as professors?

I'm wondering about their difference in thesis.
Masters is more focus in efficiency to a specific field
While PhD is like a nobel prize? I heard that it is like proving a new idea that will contribute to the field

PhD is a waste of time, especially if you got in something as pedestrian as System’s Engineering.

Did they require you to teach 2 semesters of undergrad? Or was it more?

This is not accurate. I published the research I was required to do for my masters degree, as did my classmates - we were expected to. I spent 18 months doing nothing else.
