IELTS - How to get a high score on Task 1 of the IELTS

Watch this lesson to get a better score on Task 1 of the academic IELTS.

Panicked about the writing section of the IELTS? Or do you work in a field that requires you to present graphs? This English lesson will teach you key vocabulary to use when describing different types of graphs, a requirement in task 1 of the IELTS writing section. I will explain what you must do in Task 1, how you will be marked, and key expressions to use. I'll also give you some tips to help you achieve a high score on the IELTS.

adjectives you can use to measure degrees of changes are
if change is large or high you can use dramatic, sharp,rapid, remarkable, striking, abrupt
if change is medium you can use moderate, significant
if change is low or small you can use slight, slow, marginal etc

*WRITING TIPS:*
• 4:50 — *Introduction* / _This [graph type] [synonym of 'shows'] the changes in [y axis] [preposition] [x axis]_
• 11:34 — *Body:*
-- *1)* _"There was a (optional: adjective) [trend] [preposition] [topic] [preposition] [x axis]."_
-- *2)* _"[Topic] [trend: verb × past simple] [preposition: from-to, between, etc] [x axis]."_
---- *a)* 12:04 — *Positive Trends*: (verb × simple past / noun) rose, increased, went up, climbed, jumped
---- *b)* 15:34 — *Negative Trends*: (verb × simple past / noun) declined, decreased, went down, dropped, plummeted*, slumped*
----_(*emphasis for acute angles)_
---- *c)* 18:34 — *Neutral Trends*: (verb × simple present / noun) remains [stable / steady / etc], (noun) plateau
---- *3)* Adjectives for emphasis in ascending order of dramatic effect: Steady, Significant, Dramatic, Sudden,
---- *_Note_*_: Adjective+"-ly" = Adverb (describes the verb before or after it)_


I don't mind writing this down, but I really wish time-coded titles
were a standard in the descriptions of educational videos.

 i find this task very difficult when i have a lot of information and dont know how to sum them up. ugh!

Hi Emma, your classes are fantastic and very helpful! Thank you for making and publishing them. There is one remark that I would like to highlight: I think amongst the charts the one that was labelled "flow chart" is actually an "org chart", short for "organisation chart". The flowchart is, as you describe it, a diagram that shows how a process is organised therefore it has arrows pointing from one action to other actions or decision points. This is based on my experience at a multinational company. And thanks again for the video. It is great!

In Adam's video " What to Write!", he said that there shouldn't be any conclusion. However, in this video, you mentioned the 3 parts. You've got the introduction, body, and the CONCLUSION. Just wanna know which one I should follow. Thank you.
