I once tried doing this strategy, but I couldn't do it. I wanted it all. I needed it all.

When 2.0 launched I did a run where I stayed one planet and only claimed systems around me that had a 1 lane connection to my homeworld. I sped through research and was an economic powerhouse with a dyson sphere built, until the Prethoryn invaded the galaxy. At this point I had every viable planet in my home system covered in space habitats. As they invaded through the galaxy and started to decimate my federation I found myself on the front line. The empire next to me had just fallen and my systems were readily being invaded by the swarm, being lost one after another.

They attacked my habitats in my home system and captured them. I couldn't do anything for them so the props there eventually died and the stations became rubble. But what I learned quickly was if I spammed the construction of assault armies and kept them stationed on my homeworld I could in effect negate any invasions through my sheer overwhelming force, thanks to my planetary shield and flushed out economy. I used this to my advantage and sent a construction ship to claim an unoccupied system a fair distance behind me.

From there I set up a heavily fortified fortress that would send out fleets to commit guerrilla warfare and stall the advance of the Prethoryn. I eventually managed to push them back and reclaim all of my old land, I even managed to sneak a Science ship into the heart of Prethoryn territory to claim a queen and get her back safely by learning how to avoid the patrols. It was all going well. I didn't have the strength to take out their fleets, but I could prevent them from advancing.

I made it all the way to their infested homeworld using stealth. I had my ships in orbit, my armies ready. But I couldn't invade. I kept attacking and attacking, but the damage would just regenerate. I couldn't destroy the world because I didn't have room for the ascension. I ended up having to abandon that save file because it was bugged and soon made outdated.

But damn did I see first hand how good the one planet strategy can be even today. You speed through research and have the most stable economy around.

Rick: Lambastes Morty for trying to use his base senses to make the shelf level.

Morty's senses: Instantly percieve Rick's floor as perfectly level.

this is honestly so true. managed to have my first win with the one-planet strategy, and now i've been roleplaying as an expansionist hivemind. even by 100 years later, i still only have like 3 planets.

Meanwhile, I went for a compulsively expansionist play this time.

Needless to say, I feel like imperial Russia.

Nice size...

Everything else is shit.

I can only imagine an empire where it doesn’t take literal years to get from one side of it to another

I tried the one planet strategy on my second ever run of Stellaris.

This video... it does not lie. I didn't think I would admit this considering how well my first game went and that I had lots of planets, but yes... this guy is right. The one planet strategy... is the best strategy... though, admittedly, you'll run a bit into the mineral availability problem, but, if you blitz research for mineral production enough... you'll eventually become so powerful you'll be more technologically advanced than FALLEN AND AWAKENED EMPIRES! Seriously! Try it! Today! It works! Exceedingly well! Worst part about it is that you'll have to keep clicking the research tabs again and again because your guys are sciencing so fast it's like they put Einstein and Oppenheimer together! Go! Now!

As a newfriend who started in 2.2 a lot of this is confusing

This video fits me, only instead its my friend showing me Stellaris. Since I've played the game, I find it hard to want to play other 4x space games since Stellaris does so much right.
