Electro Voice RE27 or RE20 ? Which sounds best? A podcaster comparison in a home studio

**Update 9/26/24) - In this video I stated the shureSM7b requires phantom power. However, it does NOT require phantom power.**

In this video, I demonstrate the sound difference between an Electro Voice RE20 and the Electro Voice RE27 as I have used both to record my podcast as well as do most of my YouTube video voice overs.
Ultimately the best microphone is whatever sounds best to you, whether its an Electro Voice, or Shure SM7b, or some other microphone.

Good review.
The RE27, to me, is the sound of ESPN.
RE20 is the sound of most other radio.

RE20 was smoother and would be great to listen to all day. The 27 was def. brighter but w/ judicious EQ that 20 would slay it. My vote is for the 20 for podcasters or voice over.

Also a deep voice guy and found the RE20 too dark in my testing, similar to the Shure SM7B.

I eventually landed on the RE320 which has similar character and brightness to what I’ve heard from the 27ND, albeit at a cheaper price point.

That said, I’ve been thinking about getting a 27ND to truly compare.

27 is more flexible with EQ controls than the 20 allowing the user to shape the audio to their voice or genre. Both are excellent mics with the 27 being the newer EV version of their large diaphragm offering. If the 20 will be used by one person whose voice it fits, then get the 20. If you run a studio where multiple varying voices will perform or be interviewed, go with the 27.

Did you explain the 27 settings. Because it sounds like you used the high filter

I like that desk. Where did you shop that?

Your re20’s sounded much more pleasant on the ears. Crisp and smooth. The 27 would get harsh and would actually hurt during some pronunciations. Just my opinion.

Jhae, Thanks for sharing your EV mics with us. One thing I didn't catch was how you setup the RE-27 switches on the mic for your preference. Can you please share that info as to the RE-27s switch conig you had set during this recording please. Thanks Paul

I have a deep voice and I’m looking to capitalize on that with Mic for podcasting //voice overs. out of these two whats my choice🤤re27 has more power, imo it sounds the better of the two.

I just posted my quick comparison and I much prefer the RE20… I find the RE27 too harsh sounding…

Great video! Since you’re talking about podcasting recording, would the tips you give here also translate to voiceover work? Seems like it would.

Great video! But 3:30 into the video before starting with the comparison? Come on

GIGO. Not really true because of processing. It can make huge differences. Still better to be good going in, but...

I did like the RE 27 better- subtle difference but you can hear it.

The difference is clear. I prefer the 27 model. Good video. Thanks.

I think you would be able to hear the difference between the mics more clearly if you had your mouth closer to the mics while speaking into them.

The RE27 sounds crystal clear. I just bought one the other day.
