RE20 just sounds best. The RE320 is close enough and it should be easy enough to notch out that slight high frequency, plus it’s a $100 less.

This is the best sound demo I've listened to of these three mics. I can very easily hear the tone of each mic due to how you spoke into them so closely etc. Very intense tone differences.

You have to understand the 27nd, the versatility with switches allows to sound like the re20 or it's own sound for dull sources. Sensitivity it's something you'll need also and the ND magnet will allow that.

What's the best pre amp or configuration for the RE20? i have a Rodecaster but the sound isn't good enough, tried with a cloudlifter, dbx268 but still not getting a clear sound

Holy fuck the RE27N/D in the US is the same price as the RE20 in my country.
The RE27 is 750 euros (830 USD) and the RE20 550 euros (610 USD) (including tax.)
The RE320 priced the same. Super odd.

Out of the box, I feel like the RE27 was the best with the high contour turned on.
But for me I think the RE20 would be a better fit. Especially like you said regarding a blank canvas.
