I have a 2005 and it has this also. I understand how it works and all yet it still is confusing why they feel the need to include it unlike basically all other cars. But essentially it's this.

That dial turned all the way blue, doesn't necessarily mean cold air, it means no heat. When the ac is enabled, and you also have the cold/freon button enabled, or just have the climate controls as automatic, the ac will produce cold air. In my experience, you're meant to have the red/blue dial all the way blue for cold air to actually come out. I theorize if you had the dial on red, and also the ac with cold freon enabled or automatic at a low temp, the air coming out would end up being a neutral temperature, because you'd be running cold ac and the heater core at the same time.
To assume for simplicity that we aren't using the auto climate features in this explanation, the way you'd make the ac produce hot air is with the cold button disabled, but the fan speed up, and the dial turned all the way red. If the cold is still disabled, and fan speed up, but you turn the dial to blue, it will not produce heated air because the dial is not red, but just because the dial is blue it actually won't make cold air either, it will just ventilate neutral or outside temperature air.

So In summary, the dial is meant for controlling the heater core, while the cold button controls the freon and cold air. Although yes, you could combine the controls to achieve a perfect temperature, or just put the heat dial in the middle and then let the auto climate controls set your temperature.

I figured it out yesterday my bmw is so old that the color on it faded so you essentially have to move it to one side to see if its gonna be hot or cold so fun in 20 degree weather
