Oxygen on Mars
In 2021, NASA's Perseverance rover successfully produced oxygen from the Martian atmosphere, marking a significant milestone. The MOXIE instrument housed within the rover generated a total of 122 grams of oxygen by extracting it from the carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere, which consists of about 96% carbon dioxide.

The MOXIE (Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment) employs an electrochemical process to extract oxygen atoms from carbon dioxide molecules in the Martian atmosphere. The device heats the air to around 800°C (1,470°F) and uses a solid oxide electrolysis cell to facilitate the reaction.

This process converts carbon dioxide (CO₂) into oxygen (O₂) and carbon monoxide (CO). For every two oxygen atoms extracted, one carbon atom remains, resulting in the release of carbon monoxide back into the Martian atmosphere.

The instrument is designed to produce up to 10 grams of oxygen per hour, with a purity level of 98% or better. The first successful extraction occurred on the 60th Martian day of the mission, yielding about 5 grams of oxygen - enough for roughly 10 minutes of breathable air for an astronaut.

The success of MOXIE is crucial for future crewed missions to Mars. Producing oxygen on-site reduces the need to transport large quantities from Earth, significantly lowering mission costs and logistical challenges. Oxygen is essential not only for breathing but also for rocket propellant.

By demonstrating the feasibility of extracting oxygen from Martian resources, MOXIE embodies the concept of in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) - the practice of using local materials to support human activities on another planet.
