There are other reasons for this as well: The US has a diabetes epidemic - you're too fat. You have for profit health care - meaning there's no profit in keeping large stocks of PPE. Your population is inherently suspicious of government. You have a class based society - you either have money or you don't. You were doomed from the start, even with the bad government.

Here in Florida yesterday I heard a radio advertisement for a flight booking agency that promised really low rates for tickets to countries that will not allow us into their countries.
