Quick explanation from a former synchronized swimmer: we do this for competitions. Yes I know it’s horrible and there “has to be a better way” but this is how it’s done. You mix knox gelatin with water and use a rubber barbecue brush to lather on a huge layer so it hardens like a swim cap and your hair stays in place. I remember after swimming my team and I would each have brought one bottle of conditioner each just for that post swim shower to take off the gelatin from our hair. Oh and also it stinks like wet dog and drips down your body and re-dries and pulls all your peach fuzz. It’s gross 🤡

Edit: we don’t use swim caps for competitions because it looks more uniform to just have a bun cap and gelled scalp. Synchro performances are all about the aesthetics and also swim caps can fall off! That’s the last thing you want during your routine (judges take points off for everything)
