Software engineering is one of the highest paid professions right now, and compensation continues to increase.

And at the very top of this pyramid we have what people call the “FAANG” companies, which stands for Facebook (now Meta), Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Google. These big tech firms are regarded as the most prestigious and highest paying companies on the planet.

But how much do they actually pay?

Given Facebook's name change to Meta, I think it only makes sense to replace the FAANG acronym. My suggestion? MANGA

This was probably near the top as far as salary breakdown goes. But what about data scientists, product managers, etc.?

How is possible to include Netflix in top tech companies but not Microsoft?! I think Netflix is a big company but not as big as Microsoft in tech world.

Great video! You could even expand this as a series by making other videos breaking down FAANG RSU vesting schedules, benefits/perks, COL breakdowns, and various other things.

Note these numbers vary wildly depending on location (as much as x2.5 difference)

Well for starters, Facebook/Meta was actually having a hard time picking up engineers because of all the bad press they've been getting the last few years. That's why they disrupted the market and increased salaries the back half of 2021. After that the pay difference was so high, SWEs were running to get in on the action. Then in December 2021, the other Big Tech companies started to raise their salaries as well. This sort of warfare has been going on for at least a year and it's causing major shifts in engineering talent.

Considering that most of these companies are in located in the SF Bay Area, the entry level salary is not that good… you’ll have a slightly nicer than average lifestyle but that’s pretty much it

Amazon L6 is Senior Engineer and Amazon L7 is Principal Engineer. Compensations are accurate for both, but I spoke incorrectly in the video. Thanks to those who pointed this out!

Great video but I'd add that even though levels is accurate, you should consider the location of the positions as it pays a role in the TC given for the same level

Netflix does pay in stock, but gives you the freedom to decide how much is salary and stock.

For Amazon L6/SDE3 is actually ‘senior sde’. L7 is PE/Principal Engineer

There's a higher tier on this pyramid. HFTs like optiver, Jane Street, IMC are leagues above faang. Jane Street for example pays close to 400k to just new grads

I like Netflix's model of just paying all of the salary in cash. I would prefer to be able to choose what I invest in. Not that I couldn't sell the stock and do that anyway but it's just easier to not have to go through all of that.

when people say faang (in this context) they really just mean like 180k+ tc, pretty much all the same at that comp level. Just dont only apply to faang, dozens of other companies that pay the same and more

I had no idea people made this much- I'm literally working as an AI specialist, specializing in reinforcement learning n stuff, got a Masters, and am working for barely above minimum wage as an AI specialist. How tf do you get interviews at these companies? I always send my resume through their application portals and never hear back. Actually, how do you guys break the $20/hr wage marker? (Note: I live in Michigan, US, if that helps).

Doesnt it matter considerably where the employee is located? 300k in the bay area is like, 90k in most of the country, no?

What happens when Netflix falls out of the top software engineering companies?

In what world is Netflix there but not Microsoft? It should be FAAMG not FAANG, that makes no sense.
