Neutron stars are some of the strangest things in the universe, but are they the source of the mysterious Fast Radio Bursts? Or is it aliens? Spoilers: probably not aliens.

Wow, so (hypothetically) a neutron star can be massive enough that it _should_ be a black hole but isn't, due to its rotation? What a *revolutionary* concept.

He's such a good speaker. So clear and easy to understand.

... The universe has so much radio noise in it, maybe it's more likely that aliens WOULDN'T use it. It's starting to feel like using radio waves to communicate across the cosmos would be like using hot water to communicate in a freshly drawn bath XD

I've been listening to Joy Division since I was a teenager, and that was some time ago now, and the album art from Unknown Pleasures seems to show up everywhere. I think I see a t shirt with that on a near weekly basis, but for some reason I never knew it was the radio waves from a neutron star. 1.40 for anyone who, like me, also have lived under a rock and need their own moment of "wait a minute, I've seen that before!". Didn't even take me much googling to confirm it either. It's really what the cover is. How have i missed this for nearly 20 years?

So being inert can cause bulging around the middle?!
This explains a lot...

They're forming in supernovae
They're going through a gas wind
The astronomers are losing their minds
The blitzars bop

_"This actually caused quite a kerfuffle back in the 1960s."_
First time I've ever heard the word 'kerfuffle'; thought it was made-up at first.

So would it be possoble that a neutron star is deformed by its rotation so much that the poles are inside the schwarzschild radius but the equator isn't and therefore there is some kind of 'partial black' hole?

Plot twist: The Neutron Stars ARE the aliens, and we just weren't thinking the right way about them.
Jk lol XP

The real question is...

Are neutron stars flat too?

The universe is a big place. If these stars are possible, no matter how slim the odds are, at least one of them exists.

It's funny how I have no idea what the mass of Mt Everest is, but I can still relate to it when you mention it when it comes to a teaspoon of neutrons.

Scishow - " Neutron stars are weird! ".
Me - " The heck is "kerfuffle" ? Hey Google... "

So the blitzar is bizarre.

There's a T shirt idea in there somewhere.

last time i was this early, the universe was the size of a tennis ball.

And also, as far as I know, rotation doesn't change the density of an object because while it does cause a bulge to appear at the equator, the poles get sucked in, keeping the overall volume constant. I think what you mean is that the centrifugal force from the rotation of the neutron star resists the inward pull of gravity and keeps it from becoming black hole.

Sounds like a new rad type of chess game.

FRIKKIN fascinating!
Neutron stars are my #1 favorite objects in space, and I thought I knew so much about them.
Nope. Not even close. I might know probably 10% of what these ppl know.
They forget more about astronomy than I’ll ever learn.

I feel like you could take every word in this vid, put it to a dope beat, and you’d have an epic breakdancing song
