My Fully UniFi Home Network after Two Years - Long Term Review

In this video we'll take a look at my home network, two years after I moved it to a fully UniFi environment. I'm planning on making further changes in the near future so I thought it would be a good idea to do a follow up review to talk about how I've found it over a longer period and to discuss some changes that have come in software updates since installation.

Thank you, this is so incredibly valuable.

So many channels are just giving a advanced unboxing without any real world experience.

Every product has its quirks that you only run into through prolonged daily use.

Honestly the Mikrotik 10gig switches are great. They work very well with the ubiquity switches as a 10gig backbone. The downside is that you will need to put in the VLAN's manually.

I've been running mikrotik switches for a while now and the only downtime I've ever had was while the power was out. They're so stable but it's just a little disappointing that they don't have a centralised management software, otherwise they would be a real ubiquity killer.

I bought a UDM Pro 3 weeks ago... And ordered 5 switches, 2 APs (the new ones with Wi-Fi 6) and 3 cameras as soon as I saw how easy and powerful UniFi is! This is getting expensive but I want to UniFi everything! Next is the G4 Doorbell which I don't need but I just can't look away! There's even a Homebridge plugin that handles 2-way audio, motion detection and it even rings on AirPlay devices, I just want it!

Always got to give a thumbs-up for someone that makes me feel like I'm learning from Sean Connery

Great update thanks for sharing. Your orginal video 2 years ago pushed me to unifi kit and i love it now. Look forward to more videos on the changes you hinted on. Thanks again

I'm in the process of running Cat6 to all my rooms then installing a rack. I've never done networking before so it's going to be a big learning curve. In your video, I picked up some things but a lot of it is still foreign to me.

I can’t fault the UDM-Pro and USW-PRO-24-PoE. Solid setup for home use 👌🏼

I made the poor choice about 12 months ago to go with an Edgerouter and a UniFi switch, I'd much prefer a full UniFi setup.

In the DJ store they do have 10gb rj45 spf+ (about £40 I think, so a bit pricey), and the new 10gbe switch is available on early access, although sold out last time I looked a few days ago. By the way, keep up the videos, it was your original video which made me buy a UDM-pro, new gen 48-POE switch, an 8-POE switch, 2 4K Gr-pro cameras and three APs for my new house, and the network every room, much to my partners dismay, he he. Apart from the UDM-pro constantly crashing when I ask it to reset via the tiny screen on the device, it seems to be working great..

Good video. I use a Normal UDM but find the lack of traffic logging annoying

Have a look at the TP-Link Omada range. No firewall is perfect. I virtualize OpenWRT, pfSense and Mikrotik RouterOS depending on my needs.

Hi Cameron, very informative vid. I had no idea about the 1500 frame size limitation when PPoE encapsulation is involved! Does this mainly become a limitation if you have a very fast symetrical Internet connection?

Please could you link to more info on the manual JSON config file for the USG?

I manage local only DNS entries via pihole. Granted it's another UI, but works quite well

I regret moving to a Unifi world...So limited. Can't even do proper NAT on the UDM Pro...Not to mention with the security breaches

What PoE Injector is mounted in your rack? :) Looks like a perfect solution for me

Just curious as to why you went unifi route instead of edge, much more flexibility, features and no messing with json files for what i would consider basic features

Could be the rumour mill running but I read online that the USGPro4 is going to be EOL soon which is why there has been a lack of updates and consumers will be forced to upgrade to the next greatest device.
Another issue with the Unifi controller setup is there is no way to setup sub-interfaces which might not sound like a problem, but most home users will need some way to access their modems admin page out of the WAN port, again, config.gateay.json can be used, but to me, that should be a common setting in the UI.
My USG Pro4 has been working well, but I have on a few occasions had to reboot it because for some unknown reason has stopped handing out IP addresses to clients.
Honestly, If I could go back I would save the £600+ I've spent on Unifi gear and look elsewhere. I started with some APs and wanted a gateway (to replace a Mikrotik 750gr3 I think it was), and then a PoE switch, but as you said, you want to stick with all Unifi gear so it all ties into that admin interface, but wish I hadn't.

In the early access program they have new 10 gig switches with lower ports not as much ports on it for a good price 200 bucks and stuff like that so don't worry they're coming also you can hook up other switches to it and you'll have to just manage them to their own three layer switch you don't have to have unify
