Hey there, I really liked your approach to this topic. Rather than doing the same preset vs same preset, it makes more sense to try and target a framerate at a fixed resolution and see what needs to be sacrificed in order to get there.

As a person who upgraded from an Rx580 to a 3060 ti, i can absolutely say it is a worthwhile upgrade and you will most definitely appreciate the freedom of cranking settings on games/dlss/higher resolutions. However, the 580 and 1060 are nowhere near obsolete. Those cards are insanely value oriented and something as simple as overclocking them a bit+ fsr + optimizing your game settings you can still prolong the life of those cards for at least one-two more generations.

I really like the format of these comparisons. There are lots of channels that do more scientific absolute performance benchmarks, but discussing the settings and thoughts on actual usage is a nice change of pace and a great comparison of what you have to trade off with different hardware.

I went from a 1060 3gb, to a 3060 12gb about 6-7 months ago... I have been wondering how much of a jump it was objectively speaking. From experience, it seems leaps and bounds better, but it's cool to see a side by side!

Something else people should take into account if upgrading is the difference between power consumption. Someone may have to upgrade their power supply as well if upgrading from a 1060 to a 3060. The 3060 can use around 60 watts more power. The RX 6600 uses about the same power as a 1060 so going to that wouldn't require a power supply upgrade.

Fantastic video. This side by side comparison, changing the settings and taking about the difference helps understand the what you can get out of these cards so much better than simply running ultra settings and looking at a percent difference.

Since the GTX 1060 was officially launched in August 2016 with other variants in 2017, & 2018 it still can't quite compare obviously to a 3060 due mainly to the ageing architecture, but is a capable card for slightly older titles on a 1080 resolution.

Im on a loaner R9 370 and while its still breathing, im not getting much over 30 fps... So looking for something new.

Another aspect to consider: nVidia and AMD typically don't release their mid-rage to low-end until sometime after their top-end products. For all we know, it might be well into 2023 before a 4060 comes out.

Launch price for GTX 1060 was 249$
Launch Price for GTX 1080Ti was 699$
Launch price of RTX 3060 was 329$
Actual price of RTX 3060 until recently was 700$
in performance RTX 3060 is weak GTX 1080Ti with RT cores.
So basically you get a weak GTX 1080Ti with RT cores when you buy a RTX 3060.
Technically dont buy a 3060 for these ridiculousprices, even at 550$ as a replacement for a good 249$ card.

Upgraded today from a gtx 1060 to a rtx 3060 and holy cow that thing runs like a truck. I ran into a cpu limit for the first time and glad that i bought a ryzen 5 5600x to uprade my ryzen 5 1600 af. Happy to finally upgrade my GPU after 6 fucking years xD
