My Biggest Tips for Visiting Monument Valley

Entrance Fee: Monument Valley is a Tribal Park located on the Navajo Reservation. This means that an America the Beautiful Pass (NP pass) will not be accepted. The entrance fee for the park is $8 per person. This fee is required even if you are staying at The View Hotel.

Take the Scenic Drive: There is a 17 mile scenic dirt road that winds through Monument Valley. The road is dirt and can be very rough in places. Although I did see some cars on the road, it is not recommended. The cars were struggling traversing the bumps and loose sand when going up hill. For this reason, it is recommended to have a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

Take a Tour: If you do not have a vehicle that is capable of driving the dirt scenic road, it would be best to schedule a tour with a Navajo tour guide. They will do all of the driving and can even take you to locations off of the main scenic road that is not allowed if you were to drive yourself.

Watch a Sunrise and Sunset: Watching the sunrise and sunset from The View Hotel is one of my favorite things to do in the park. If you only had time for one, I would say do not miss a sunset. This is because the shadows on the Mittens are cool during this time. Just because the sunset is better, I would still not miss a sunrise either.
