Allen & Heath Qu Series - iLive FX

iLive FX:

Qu features 4 internal stereo FX processors taken from our flagship iLive digital mixing system. Each can be loaded from a library of different effects types and presets based on emulations of popular industry standards.

You work with the FX screen in the same way you would do with a traditional outboard rack. Start with an empty rack as shown here. Touch the tabs at the top to select a rack slot. Press the Function key to open the Library page, scroll through and select the FX type you wish to load, and experiment with the different parameters available.

Touch the top right tab to select the Back Panel view. Select Channel/Return to use a single channel Direct Out as the source, for example for a gated verb on a snare. Select Insert to patch the effect in line with an input channel or mix master. Inserted FX provide a Dry/Wet control to balance the effect with the original signal.

Select Mix/Return to use a bus to send a mix of the channels to the effect, and a dedicated stereo FX Return channel. This is typically used for effects such as reverb and delay. Choose which mix bus to use: on Qu-16 only FX1 and 2 have dedicated FX buses; if you want to use FX3 or 4 you can patch one of the ten Mix buses.

Press the corresponding FX Mix key. The channel faders move to present the sends to the effect. Set the master strip fader to 0dB and adjust the channel sends to hear the effect.

Make sure the FX Return channel in the top layer is unmuted and set to 0dB. Press its Select key to work with the FX processing parameters, or adjust the return channel Parametric Equaliser.

When using delay effects, you can assign a SoftKey as a tap tempo key. This lets you quickly tap in the beat for a vocal delay without the need to open the FX screen.

As a counterpoint to some of the criticisms I'd just like to say I got one of these yesterday, I've never used a digital mixer before, I'm nothing more than a keen amateur and I've been blown away by how good this mixer sounds and how easy it is to use, it just seems obvious really. For me it's a gamechanger.

this is one of the most easy-to-use digital mixers I have ever seen. it has an analog feeling but with digital processing. If you can't work with this one, it's time to go back to analog. xD

is this a better mixer than the cq 20b?

Because the presentation is so fast it looks complicated. but even slowed down I think this the most convuluted way to organise a simple thing like FX. Why should it differ that much from an analogue mixer is beyond me.

I'm trying to get some FX through my monitor mixes but so far cannot find anything on it.  I probably over looked it in one of these videos somewhere.

I don't see the Vocal Shifter VS1 in our QU32 FX Library, can you purchase it (or a suite) and add it?

I need help! I have an allen and heath SQ-7 and I haven't found a good effect for vocals and instruments, for example I really like the plate reverb effect of the Yamaha M7CL consoles, I have been trying different effects on the SQ-7 and I haven't found any of them to my liking. I would be very grateful if you could help me 🙏

Just purchased QU - 16 & 24 digital mixer. I have not viewed any tutorial video memo but am just going through this mixer by way of reading the manual book. Do you have any complete tutorial video? And if you do have them, how much are they or can it be downloaded?

This is so fast that i can't get it. I'm using a qu-32 at my church and i havent got FX on my sound and the singers keep telling me it sounds really flat even with the GEQ in. I need to learn how to use the FX on the singers and the instruments. Show me a link or better still a better explained version or video. Please.

Looks like an incredible mixer and I'm seriously contemplating buying one having used and loved my analogue A&H desk, but coming from a simple to use analogue ZED desk with easy to operate built in effects and general functionality, the QU desk seems seriously complicated for a relatively novice user like myself.

The Mackie DL1608 is seriously user intuitive and simple to operate at the same level and is swinging the balance in its favour at the minute...

Really undecided. Is there anywhere/anyone that could offer some in depth training with this mixer? I guess over time I would be able to master the QU desk but it seems such a daunting possibility.

Agree with the comment that this video moves way to fast to be of any real use. This is not a tutorial.

This is without doubt the worst demo I've ever seen in my life. You go so bloody fast that nobody can keep up. Wish I hadn't bought it.

I'm sorry but this video is moving way way too fast to follow.  I came from the studio live persons board which I loved.  I understand this board is much better however, its videos explaining how it works need to slow down a lot.

Why not be able to just have what ever effect you like on what ever channel you like without all this sends and return crap?

This is so unhelpful ! You don't explain how to apply the effects to a channel for use when playing back recorded material or for that matter processing a live signal. This is so disappointing as it is the most complex part of the recorder. Yes the delivery of the tutorial is fast as someone else has commented, but i guess you could re watch a few times and get the gist of things but as you don't cover the process in the first place i find this tutorial pretty useless, Sorry
