Germany is an ally that can make a big contribution to multinational interoperability if it embraces the F-35. However, over the last few years, several reports have suggested that German decision makers prefer the Eurofighter Typhoon. One potential reason for this is Germany's interest in maintaining European production of Luftwaffe fighter jets.

Both airplanes have their advantage and use. The F35 is the most advanced i radar detection, however very limited at that with 4 internal stations for weapons mounts. Also the F35 is structurally limited in g-force, i.e. sharp turns in case of avoidance turns compared to the Typhoon. Also it is slower in top speed and lacks supersonic cruise. But worst of all, Germany has experience with another single engine Lockheed fighter jet, the F104, also known as the "widow maker".
