They went out of their way to market it as a "standalone expansion" rather than a sequel, in order to temper expectations. Making a Subnautica 2 would be like winning the lottery twice in a row.

If you love Subnautica then you will enjoy this game. It has nice quality of life changes, such as a smaller seaglide, modified recipes and LARGE ROOMS you can divide into smaller sections with walls and doors. Some biomes feel unfinished however and the endgame area (Crystal Caverns) is somewhat close quarters, with the last stretch covered with too many of a certain new leviathan and little else. Just think of this as a DLC since it's not something polished much like it's predecessor. Now if only they could have removed the fog from glass windows -_- 7.5/10

It seems this game is definitely not as frightening as the last one, but it also seems to be way more fun and full of content. Subnautica was not intended to be a horror game in general, it isnt even in the horror game genre, this game is much brighter less scarier and enjoyable for some people, but for other it might not be as fun as the horror aspects are more or less gone, not to say you won't feel scared nor alone. I'd say give this game a try, it might be scarier or funnier than you think it will.

Great game, nice review, except for the "emotional story part". I'm sorry, but with all the protagonists constant chatting and the clearly more straightforward story it didn't hit as hard as the Sea Emperors story from the original game. Silent protagonist having a lonely adventure in an alien world was a lot more immersive. Less is more. Subnautica is a success because of the world design and exploration, it doesn't need some overwritten plot to take you out of the experience. I'd say Below Zero is worth playing for exploring the awesome new biomes though.
