If the sheer pin is compromised, you might be deceived into thinking the engagement paw is fully locked into place when it’s really not. It’s not fail safe like the additional pin that you slide through to make sure the support bar is 100% locked into the teeth. The handle could have the pin completely sheered and just be held together with rust or corrosion. The paw should slide into place and hold tight with weight but I wouldn’t bet my life on it!

A jack stand is the last thing I would cheap out on

Why I throw a tire underneath and leave the jack in place as well. If something fails I've got backups.

By the way, if anyone has a Pittsburgh jack stand, you can take it to HF and get a Dayton as the one shown in this video. There'd a recall on the Pittsburgh.

Old trusty duralast, look to be thirty years old, and you’re still here to make a video about a safer jack stand.

Cough cough so the past decades of everyone using normal jack stands is wrong but buy a new harbor freight one that cost 2x as much for a safety pin....

The roll pin doesn't hold the jack up, I have one broken and you can still use it normally, just can't use the handle but the wedge will still hold in place.

I got the 6 ton ones even though my gvw is around 3400 lbs. That's one thing I didn't want to be close to the max weight rating with.

Harbor Freight isn't messing around with Daytona or Icon. They have two brands that are beloved and sell like crazy, they're not going to screw that up

Reminds me of the front fell off the ship videos.

“Jack stands have rigorous standards and build specs on what they can be made of.”

Like what?

“Paper…no paper. Paper derivatives. No styrofoam. Cardboard is outta the question. No plastic.”

Everyone knows, before the pitts jackstand were sold, noone gave a 2nd thought about a jack stand

They had to do something to restore confidence after a high profile recall.

You people are missing the point of the video. It's not all about the specific harbor freight Jack stand itself. The message I'm getting from the video is that things aren't made to the same standards that they were 20 years ago. So you gotta do your due diligence these days and keep yourself self. Because nobody else is gonna keep yourself safe.

The roll pin is to prevent pulling the lock out when there is a load on. The locking mechanism is supported by the frame. Project fram has a good video on testing them.

I've seen jack stands that were actually busting at that welded seem,
Those new stands seem more secure,

I had a pair of the cheapest jack stands and still work without any issues, tho i am not advising anyone to use cheap jack stand, one thing to note that those pin that hold the catch paw with the release arm are only there hold those parts together, they don't bare the load on the jack itself, you remove those pin and jack would still work.
