How to Calculate Rafter Lengths for a Gable Roof

There's nothing like building in the real world to help you apply the math you learned in school.

Theoretical math can only take you so far. You still need a carpenter’s good sense of how to use it. And for roofs, that means making sure to include your additions and deductions 🏠.

Here’s a good example for a simple gable roof. The plans call for a 36 ft span, with a 2 ft overhang and a 6 inch pitch. All we need to figure out is the actual rafter length and how high to set the ridge👇.

1️⃣ Divide the span in half for the theoretical run. Add any overhang and subtract the thickness of the fascia and ½ the thickness of the ridge
2️⃣ Enter this value and push RUN
3️⃣ Pushing DIAG will give you the actual length of the rafter
4️⃣ Pushing RISE will give you the rise of the rafter
5️⃣ Calculate the height above plate
6️⃣ Add steps 4 and 5 together for the height from top of the plate to the top of the ridge
