Isaac Galvan, 23 was living paycheck-to-paycheck in Port Arthur, Texas but during the pandemic, he taught himself how to code and landed a remote job as a website developer making $12 per hour, about $22,000 per year.

His newfound flexibility allowed him to relocate to Querétaro, Mexico. In April 2021, he packed up his belongings and began his new life.

With only $3,000 saved up, he quickly found how far the U.S. dollar stretched abroad. Shortly after his move, he made down payment on a new car, signed a lease on an apartment and even saved a few hundred dollars a month.

“In leaving America, I felt like I was finally able to have the American dream,” he said, “I took part in this reverse migration so I could finally have a life of my own.”

I love that people are returning to their ancestral homes and bringing their skills and money with them. It’s inspired me to look into dual citizenship myself.

I had the pleasure of living in Mexico City for the past 4 months and Isaac's point about the lack of pressure to earn a ton of money just to live independently is spot on. I am currently working towards gaining temporary residency and learning Spanish so that I may move permanently. Thanks CNBC for sharing Isaac's story. Anyone reading this, send good juju lol.

Love how ppl are realizing how toxic it is to live in a country that forces you to grind day in and out just to barely maintain a decent quality of life. I lived in Mexico City for a month this year and since its been hard to justify living in the States. Happy to see Isaac thriving✨

Thanks to CNBC for sharing my story!
I hope to inspire people to make the move and to live a more fulfilled life.
Let me know if you have any questions! I am happy to help.
(Clarification: The food budget includes all my grocery spending including non food items, and eating out / weekend spending)

Let’s go Isaac! One decision changed everything. Bold move for a 23 year old. Proof you don’t need a million to live like you’re retired ✌🏽

Our parents did whatever they had to do provide and survive, I love how their children are not settling. They are dreaming, pushing boundaries and living much happier fulfilled lives! Cheers to the “American” dreams in our homelands!

You know the American dream is dead when you have to go to Mexico to achieve it.

Inspiring story!! I’m Filipino-American and I’ve been thinking about moving to the Philippines for the lower cost of living and tropical lifestyle.

I appreciate how he is living in Mexico AND getting paid in Mexico wages. He should totally start to document his journey!

Felicidades Isaac, I am a Mexican American that has debated making the move over the last 10 years. Now I am 34 now and even more hesitant to do it. It takes a lot of courage to follow your dreams. Really happy for you!!

Some people we don’t want to create the next big company, we don’t wanna become a billionaire or make hundreds of dollars, we just wanna be able to live comfortably and enjoy life and i think that’s okay.

Society has made us think that if we’re not earning a lot of money or have the highest position we didn’t “make it”.
And it’s not about settling, just that not everybody has the same dreams or aspirations.

I moved to Mexico and lived there about 4 years and I have no regrets. But In the areas the rents are starting to climb because more Americans are moving there. That’s the only reason I came back.

I love the relocation videos. I've also been throwing the idea around to my family. I don't want to work myself to death and still not be able to live freely.

Smart move! But he's going to work remotely anyways, he might as well do it for an American company and earn more.

This is the first time I've seen someone spend more on food than they do on their rent or mortgage.

the pandemic was a blessing for me. I am Mexican American, with dual citizenship, and my wife is American. We both are civil engineers. We moved to Spain in 2021, and are working remotely. I found out in Spain that they were giving Portuguese passports to Hispanics that could demonstrate having at least one Sephardic ancestor. I found I do have Jewish heritage, so I applied for the Portuguese passport that same year and I just got it a couple of weeks ago. Now I have 3 passports! God bless Mexico, America, Spain, Portugal and the internet.

As a first generation Mexican American I am also planning to move back to my families home land. I’ve accumulated a nice chunk of savings/investments so far but I don’t want to have to rely on work when I move so my plan is to grow my investments by the time Im 35.

I agree, there is no sense of culture in America. Being in Mexico just feels more like home.

Mexico is so underrated, beautiful culture fantastic cost of living and great food and history. Truly something more people should think about as a relocation option.

That is dope! The only adjustment I'd make would be to switch to a US company $$$ and continue living in MX
