✵5 Places The US Needs Interstates

✵In June 1956, the first portion of the interstate system was opened in Central Missouri. from there Interstates started to be built all around the country. from north to south, east to west, all across the united states. In 1974, Nebraska became the first state to complete all of its interstates, in 1979 I-5 was completed, In 1986, I-80 was completed, becoming the first coast-to-coast interstate in history. And in 1992 the final portion of the original plan was completed in Glenwood Canyon, Colorado. And then it just kinda stopped. Every once in a while a new interstate spur route or other smaller ones would be finished, but overall that was the end for major interstate construction in the united states. But I feel like it was before the US was ready for the interstate system to stop building new roads. There were still a lot of routes that hadn't been built, that really needed to be built. So that's why I'm here today to give 5 Places I think there should really be new interstate highways built.

You don’t need a bridge over the Chesapeake Bay since there is one already: The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. What is really needed as part of a plan like this is a bridge-tunnel at Cape May. You could then travel from NYC to North Carolina while bypassing all the craziness that is I-95 between NY and Richmond, VA.

The I-11 needs to extend south to the Phoenix area. Way to much traffic on the extremely dangerous US 93 to get from Phoenix to Vegas

Honestly a lot of these places don’t really need interstates. Especially the one in the Great Plains. The roads they have now aren’t really an issue.

There needs to be an interstate that goes to Myrtle Beach, SC. It’s one of the fastest growing areas in the country, and the whole metro area has 450, 000 people, with millions of people during the summer. Currently to get to the interstate, we have to travel two hours west to I-95 in Florence, two hours south to I-26 in Charleston, or two hours north to I-40 in Wilmington. If there’s a bad hurricane that comes in the summer, not everyone will be able to evacuate. I think just extending I-20 East to Myrtle Beach would be the best option.

Your 5th option I-101 basically exists as US 13 and does have a bridge/tunnel that crosses the Chesapeake. Honestly it doesn't need to be considered an interstate simply because it would most likely upset the locals. It's an enjoyable drive as it is that even has a toll road by-pass in Delaware to spice things up.

As a Kansan, the two highways through Kansas wouldn’t be highly utilized. I70 and the smaller highways between Wichita and Pueblo/Colorado Springs aren’t overcrowded or anything, and if anything adding some bypasses around the medium and large towns in the area would help with the speed and convenience issues

I see a contradiction in this video and the why US suburbs suck video. I don’t quite understand your advocation for more interstates to connect some large and small towns that will inevitably lead to increased development of the same cookie cutter suburbs you are against. Love the channel. Keep up the great work.

I like the idea of an interstate farther east of 95. By the time 95 gets south to DC, it's leaving out all of the eastern shore, the largest city in Virginia (Virginia Beach), the Outer Banks, Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, and Charleston. I agree with the other commenter who said it would be nice to have the option to bypass several of the larger midatlantic cities by bridging across the Delaware Bay from Lewes to Cape May to alleviate traffic. But we must remember that the true solution to traffic is mass transit! High speed rail between several larger cities would do a lot of good! (I know about Acela, but it needs to be more affordable too).

They really need one to connect Boise, Idaho with the Spokane, Washington area. The disconnect between Northern Idaho and Southern Idaho is insane, it's almost like they are separate states

The Colorado Springs/Amarillo interstate would shave at least a couple of hours for me to drive from Colorado Springs to my relatives in Austin. It would certainly save time for Texans to drive to Colorado during ski season as well.

I like the logic of the one up the great plains, but I'm not sure the native tribes would really be down what that. I live in Delaware, and I don't think we really need the interstate. DE-1 is limited access from Wilmington to Dover and they've done a good job of adding overpasses to eliminate lights all the way down to Milford. South of that, the roads are remote enough and the traffic light enough, there's never really an issue. You can drive pretty fast all the way to the Chesapeake Bridge/Tunnel. If you could do something about the speed traps in eastern shore, Virginia, though, that would be helpful.

I-11 is actually in the works to bring from the Mexican border, to western Tucson, slightly west of Phoenix, east of Kingman, connecting to current 11, then up to Reno.
There are a few surveyed route locations for it currently.
I do think an I-13 corridor would be great from Seattle diagonally through to between Reno and Wells Nevada with a spur that would connect to Reno

Wow! I just subscribed because of this video. Why? Because it's the first video I've ever seen that suggests New interstates that need to be built! Most videos on youtube are liberal videos about tearing down interstates. lol. Good Job man!

To both Beaver and others who have mentioned it, I-11 is definitely going to Kingman AZ, and, indeed, all the way to Phoenix. AZ is already pretty far along in the planning stages with it, and will probably start upgrading US 93 to interstate standards in the not too distant future.

The extension to I-11 to northern Nevada is already planned as well, just not as far along.

In my interstate ideas, Your I-52 is where my idea for a coast to coast I-64 would be

Of all of these I-11 is probably the most needed. Four of your examples are linking much smaller cities (less than 150k population), but the link from Reno down towards Phoenix is a huge one. The first leghas been completed, but I believe the eventual plan is similar to what you outlined here. I would love to see you do some videos on the US highway system along with the interstates. The two work in tandem pretty well overall, though the US highways tend to go through cities and not around them. Keep up the good work!

As someone who lives in Reno, I absolutely agree with you that they need to better connect Las Vegas and Reno/Carson That is a boring drive that could absolutely use some much needed upgrades.

There's been a proposal since the late 1980s to extend i-135 north from Salina, KS, to York, NE. And since the early 2000s, constant upgrades have been made to US-81 in both states, gradually bringing the route up to Interstate Superhighway specifications. Also, construction is well underway in phases, which will eventually bring Kansas' stretch of U.S. 54/400 from Augusta to Garden City up to an Interstate spec superhighway,
