As an English immigrant to Andalucìa I am keen to learn about my new homeland. Over the last 15 years, being retired, I have had time to read up on the archaeology as well as the history of the region. I am looking forward to watching your video this pm to revise and to learn.

I have managed brief visits to Granada, Cordoba and Seville. My local city of Màlaga was founded by the Phonecians and has evidence of every era since then including the Moorish Alkazaba and Gibalfaro and at its foot the remains of a Roman theatre.
In the countryside the extensive terracing of the hillsides by the Moorish engineers as well as their irrigation systems still exist. On a hill walk round Istan after the fires of 2012 our walk leader pointed them out. Normally they were hidden under pine forests. (Planted in the 1960s as a cash crop). He also said that the agricultural infrastructure was not understood by the 14th C Christian conquerors of former Muslim Spain and much fell into disrepair. I dont know if this is true.

As a side note I learned way back in my late 1960s youth, when studying Old English that many of the Christian missionaries who came to re- Christianise Britain were North African. One early medieval statue of a bishop uses black stone. Scholars came up with explanations before it was realised that he was African. In fact North Aftican was a hotbed of early Chtistianity providing such church fathers as Augustine if Hippo who was of Berber origin

Moors had a 700-year reign in Spain and Portugal ending in the 15th century….. learned that in history class bk in the day in Jamaica in High School…. that is y those people have an ‘olive’ complexion….also could read the latin motto…we were also taught Latin in H.S. needed it for Medical School n Law School….my H.S. dropped it from the curriculum in early 70s….always felt that students missed out …. Latin provides the foundation for learning other modern foreign languages, even German or Russian…..in learning Latin, u become comfortable with breaking down grammatical structures and parts of speech…..also studied French n Spanish…our exit exams from HS were set by University of Cambridge, G.Br…called the General Certificate of Education, Ordinary n Advanced Levels…(GCE O’ n A’ Levels)….my last year of HS with my A’level passes, translated to my 1st year of University in Atlanta, Ga, where I attended University on scholarship….

Thank you for this powerful lecture. As an African American who recently visited many of the sites you mentioned in Spain, I was deeply moved. Seeing the architecture and legacy of the Moors with my own eyes brought your words to life. I also had the chance to visit parts of Portugal, which added even more depth to the experience. For anyone planning a similar trip, I highly recommend renting a vehicle — many of these locations are spread out and best explored by car. Truly unforgettable
