Why I Don't Like Rubric Grading | Rubric Grading Problems

I used a rubric for each major unit this semester. I wasn't a fan. I'm a big believer in holistic grading, but tried rubric grading this semester due to an assessment that needed data collection. This video covers three main reasons I don't believe rubric grading works well.

I know that there are a lot of different types of rubrics out there. If you have experience with better rubrics that don't cause these problems, please let me know in the comments.

I agree with you. I was advised that rubrics speed up grading. But I find they slow me down because of the details or nuances I consider. I also find that the score from a rubric is lower but I'm okay with it since I provide the rubric to students in advance. My hope is that they use it as a checklist before submitting their assignment.

I don't rubric grade, but I find many of many students are conditioned to rubrics. Sometimes it feels like some students don't know what to do if they don't have an itemized list of things to check off while working. It's troubling.
