I have a theory on this one. We know that the microbiome plays a big role in overall health, sleep, serotonin levels, immune function, etc. Multiple studies show that social isolation can not only cause depression, but also can take years off your life. I believe that one of the benefits of social interaction is the constant micro exchanges of each person's microbiome. Again, just my theory, but this broadens the pool of available bacteria for your microbiome at any given time and your body may choose to increase or decrease certain strains to maximize overall benefits. If you're isolated, your pool of strains is smaller and newer strains are introduced less frequently with longer periods of isolation.

BONUS THEORY: Perhaps you could somewhat counter this with eating fermented foods (kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, etc), but not 100% because there are other microbiomes outside the gut like on the skin and eyes that wouldn't see those benefits.

Your microbiome is controlling the meat suit so that you can establish a "gut feeling" with the person you just met.

Ok but sometimes if I shake hands with someone whose hands feel clammy I will treat my own hand afterwards as if it's contaminated until I can wash it. There must be some type of information exchange in a handshake whether good or bad.

That's why we should just all say 🙏 when meeting someone😊

Did that study get a baseline for how often those exact same people touch an area on their head all the time, regardless of having shaken hands?
The average person touches head/face a surprising amount of times in public.
It's not very mannerly.

I certainly don't miss those days, I have always despised shaking hands and have long been aware of how dirty humans can be

If it's about mucosal membrane contact, that explains why I scratch my nads after shaking hands. And before shaking hands, too.

I believe we do this as a natural, instinctual process on a subconscious level in order for the body to take in biochemical and bioenergetic information from those we interact with in order for system's innate internal intelligence to process information about what is really going on around us and with the people we interact with.

No freaking way am I wiping my eyes after shaking hands. I've seen too many men not wash their hands after the bathroom. Even a college staff member and a Walmart worker after taking a shit.

I'm going to watch for this in my travels, friends. I will report back with my findings.

Oh I know it's cuz when you lean in really fast to shake it kinda tickles your eyelashes or like little hairs on your ears.
