What If You STOPPED EATING Bread For 30 Days? | Mark Hyman

The average American consumes 133 pounds of flour per year. Let that sink in. What we may not realize is that every time we eat white flour, we are harming ourselves. The starch in common wheat, typically known as modern dwarf wheat, raises your blood sugar more than table sugar! Eating a diet high in carbohydrates may affect not just your waistline, but also your brain function, energy, immune system, healthspan, and more.

In this episode of my new Masterclass series, I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host, Dhru Purohit, about how and why to consider giving up bread for 30 days. We discuss why our modern wheat is not a good food choice on a daily basis, how to pause on eating bread for a month or more, why certain kinds of bread may be a better choice than others, questions from our community, and so much more.

Dhru Purohit is a podcast host, serial entrepreneur, and investor in the health and wellness industry. His podcast, The Dhru Purohit Podcast, is a top 50 global health podcast with over 30+ million unique downloads. His interviews focus on the inner workings of the brain and the body and feature the brightest minds in wellness, medicine, and mindset.

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Mitopure.

I gave up bread & sugar to see if it helped my arthritis...it did wonders, & the neuropathy in my fingers & toes went away too. I "fell of the wagon" when I wanted a hot dog one day...one lead to another the next day...
Now I'm searching the connections to hypothyroidism & diabetes due to the debilitating depression, apathy, anxiety, & brain fog. Things HAVE to change for me.

I stopped eating bread about 4 weeks ago and I have noticed my stomach is much more settled. Bread is something the whole world eats more or less. It was not easy to stop, but it was easier than stopping sugar.

I just started eating bread again after stopping for 5 years but it is homemade sourdough with Einkorn and spelt flower. I don’t seem to have any issues and it isn’t spiking my blood sugar in small amounts toasted out of the freezer.

I stopped eating bread in Jan 2013, and I finally began to get rid of the IBS & IBD I had developed over time. Inflammation gradually reduced, and so did the assistant pain of arthritis and fibromyalgia. My ability to ambulate returned and I began to be able to perform simple physical rehabilitation exercises. There is NO MAGIC.

I have crohns and i recently had a flare and tests showed my liver is slightly enlarged. I am overweight so i went on a healthy diet. No more fast food, bread i will go a week or more without and then have a slice eventually. And my stomach is becoming flatter. Now when i eat i dont feel bloated and the food settles in my stomach. A lot less heartburn. I will keep doing this

no celiac disease here but 3 yrs ago I realized I am gluten sensitive ever since I came to another country that produces a lot of wheat based food... i had inflamed goiter while eating pound cake and croissant for a week, I got lots of rashes after eating lots of donuts and noodles...and I even got dizziness and vit deficiency after eating pizza and flatbread...after doing elimination and introduce sensitivity testing, Culprit: gluten. After taking out gluten or modern wheat based food, never felt better and healthier 😊 AND, I never had these sensitivities in my homecountry, where almost all wheat is locally produced the old way...😅

Thanks doc for the advice because I love fresh bread, but I had start to notice things were starting to happen with my. Blood pressure, gain lots of weight and would get headaches.never ate bread when I was younger and my blood pressure was never over 120/70, now I am having trouble trying to control it. But I was off bread for about two weeks by accident and my body responded in a beautiful way, now listening to this video let’s me know it was the bread.when I ate bread it made me crave more bread and I just wanted to eat junk food later. Again thanks for the advice the headaches stop also.

I gave up bread when lockdowns started in March 2020, and my IBS cleared up completely. Also lost 10 pounds, when most people were gaining. 😊. This past Christmas though, I bought a panettone and excellent fruit cake, and also made shortbreads, in anticipation of having holiday visitors. Ha! We were in lockdown again, so I ate them all. What a learning experience! No, I cannot eat gluten!

You can really see, based on questions and comments, just how addictive bread and flour is. People will negotiate, beg, plead, and argue not to give it up. That, in and of itself, should be enough to try to kick it.

I own 6 bread machines. I love making and eating bread daily. My doctor wants me to stay away from alcohol. No problem as long as I can keep my bread.
