There are probably several ways to save the seeds from Mexican Sunflowers. I think the way that I'm showing you is probably one of the easiest ways to do it. I will show you each of several steps. You will probably end up with way more Mexican Sunflower seeds than you need.
If you have a better way of doing it, please feel free to share it down the the comment section.

Midwest Gardener is also on Facebook and Instagram.

I garden in zone 6b, in the state Kansas. I would love to hear from you, so feel free to comment, make suggestions, ask a question, give tips, tell about your garden, or even offer constructive criticism.
Thanks for watching!

I live in South Carolina and my friend laid down about 4 inches or more of potting soil and a good mixture of what I needed. I planted Sunflowers and Mexican Sunflowers and also some Zinnias. They all grew up pretty and tall. Birds took advantage of the Sunflower seeds and the Butterflies and Hummingbirds loved the rest. My Mexican Sunflowers grew taller than me. They are still blooming in October.

Grew them this year and wow! They took so long to grow and even longer to bloom, I almost gave up and pulled them out of the ground. They were so green and bushy for months. I assumed the seeds were bunk. I am so glad I waited. They’re just beautiful. I have them in front of my porch and watch all the butterflies, hummingbirds & bees go at it all day long. My new favorite 😊

I will be growing them this year along with the seeds from the other sunflowers that I saved. The Mexican sunflower is very beautiful and beneficial. It won't be much longer til spring. Have a great day Jim. 👍🏻🇺🇸

Thank you for this. It was so pleasant to hear you say that it didn't take long to decide that you needed to grow these beauties again. I just said that to my husband. I grew them for the first time from seed this year and am enchanted by them. I love this method for collecting next season's seeds. Thank you!

It was great to see that group of Monarchs on the flowers. I always just see one or two at a time in my garden. If that wasn't enough to win me over to the Mexican sunflower, the hummingbird definitely did. I have a hummingbird garden and feeders, so my yard is filled with hummers all spring and summer. They are such a joy. Anything that makes them happy is good enough for me. Thanks for sharing Jim. -- Cindy

Thank you for this helpful video. I forage seeds & found a non-profit with a couple giant Mexican sunflowers plants taller than me & had to come back for seed heads. I've revisited those plants several times more for seed heads, & I think I'm helping the plants make more blooms by deadheading because they were basically done before, but now they've made even more blooms. It's late September. =)

Thank you so much for this video! I bought two plants from our botanical gardens and saved about 4 heads to see if I could get the seeds. I now wish I had saved more. Your video was so so so helpful. I had no idea how to get the seeds. I don’t know the quality of mine but I have so many seeds from those 4 heads. I plan on sending several to my daughter so she and the grandchildren can grow their own. They love butterflies. Again, thank you so much! I wish I could take a picture and show you my harvest.

New subscriber here. The way you presented this was easy to watch and understand. Thanks for that! My Mexican sunflowers came to me in a wildflower mix. As everyone says, they’re stunning! I’ve been saving seed heads all season and plant to grow them next year in a row like a hedge. I will have to stake them and keep them upright when they get as tall as they are now, as the thunderstorms here knock them sideways. But that’s a small price to pay for a plant that gives pretty flowers and gives the homeowner some privacy from the road and traffic going by. Thanks again for your video!
