I want to disagree with Mr. Obasa comparing NIM with the Social Security number. In the US, everyone in the state has a Social number even a newborn baby. What if people who don't have a sim card won't get an Identification number. I see it as embezzlement because we don't have continuity in our system. What of people living overseas that still sim cards?

To facilitate complete registration of every Nigerian citizen, the immigration services can do the following; The police department of home affairs in some western countries use equipped and staffed mobile registration vehicles (units) to reach people in the communities and in some countries in Europe, renewal is also done this way once or twice a month, the mobile team goes to these communities solely to register, renew ID cards and Passport for a token fees about (€12) to encourage people to participate. That is how people data are captured and renewed regularly, you don't use force but make it easy for them to engage with government.

A good idea that will not work because it is premature. Firstly the government ought to ramp up the issuance of national identity cards to all citizens. This would take some time (weeks if not months). Then they can require the link to whatever (voter registration cards, drivers' licenses, sim cards, etc. Overall though the government at this point seems to punish the people for the government's failure to adequately protect the citizens from insecurity. Putting the cart before the horse seems to be the modus operandi of the Nigerian government. SAD!

net work data base requires 24/7 electricity in place. bar code and chips cannot be read without 24/7 internet transaction. Just keep on using old school files to back them up.

There is nothing wrong with the directive as a way registering individuals but the time frame is just completely ridiculous. They should give a notice of not less than 6 months to a year for all to comply.

Every registered SIM already has biometric attached. Why can't the government harmonise such biometrics for the the purpose and provision of NIN?
