Just when you think you know the depths of the human ingenuity to commit fraud, another guy comes along and takes the cake. But in the case of Gregor MacGregor, this will never happen as he will forever be the greatest scammer to ever live. He sold a fake country, but at a time where nobody could confidently and quickly verify his claims. Due to his social status, everyone believed him - some sold everything to live there only for disaster to await them.

It’s crazy to think he send hundreds of people to their slow death for money. What a monster

The coat of arms featured 2 unicorns! 😂😂
He must have chuckled to himself when he came up with that irony.

It’s one thing to scam people out of thousands of pounds selling bonds for a wholly fictitious country, it’s another to _knowingly_ send entire families thousands of miles (with free passage for women and children!) to an undeveloped land to die a slow death from starvation and disease. It’s a real-life 19ᵗʰ horror story. (I’m surprised no one’s made it into a movie but it might just be too horrific.)

An story as old as time. Greed is at its best when exploiting other people’s greed.

It's absolutely disgusting that people like this are able to get away with such heinous crimes. And yet, look at many of our politicians and you can plainly see that, all too often, crime DOES pay... and pay well!

The story of this man could actually make a brilliant motion picture with the right director & cast

This man was born 200 years too early. Nowadays he would easily scam his way into becoming a president.

1:25 paying large sums of money to get high ranking jobs still happens in many third world nations around the world where corruption still rules.

@6:38 They say scammers always offer you a "tell" because they want to be able to say you had been warned. The flag features a Latin motto that means "ignorant of being defeated". @Ben-Ken oh, yeah, he had a good, long laugh coming up with this, no doubt about it.
