As far as I've been able to test and seen others do, the sticks and nettles don't affect the animals. The only thing (other than you) that can hurt another animal is a snake.
You can read the books partially, just a few hours at a time. You just adjust the time you spend like you would your sleeping.
On the mountain, you can get above 200. I think I made it to 208 or 209. Most get to around 206, since it's easier (and at less risk of falling). You will still need the cartography trees, and once you level up Mapping to 3 & 4, you get a chance (and increased chance) to double your mapping distance.
Cattails can also be found near the malaria swamps in the jungle and around the other water sources (the clay buildings).

6:30 "I'm not sure how to get there (second cartographer tree) from here." Look up. It's literally right in front of you. 7:56 "There's nothing up there. Trust me." Actually, that's where you are supposed to go. You went back down instead. That flashing head can be seen at 7:38, for example, right before you start going up. 13:15 "So will have to cut these down." Or, you know, walk on top of the stones instead. 25:52 the highest place I got to in the island is to the left at this point. 26:31 that gets filled with water when it rains.

You missed the puzzle in the cave, you're supposed to light a fire in the stone bowls. You can get more cattails at the first Spanish camp in the valley just above the starting beach. There are a lot in the swamp pond just beside the camp. Watch out for the boars and snakes though.

There is second location for clay or rather second well with more clay but its further away and in more sangerous area (shakals) but 4 clay should be enough to upgrade your campfire, make clay water collector, chemistry bench and kiln which is nessesery to make 2 clay pots - 1 for collector and other for campfire as long as you want to make health recovery potion (for me it looks like powder not potion)

If you dont have a cart with you you can actualy get to well or caves without cuting down any bushes (done meny times since had to go there few times eater for clay or water durring rain since wells dry up the same way as water collectors)
I dont know if there is a place on this mountain that you can get higher than 210 metrs or feets (forgot which one is it) but be shure to do mapping up there it will cover most era colose to third cartographer tree and underwater gathering area
About books since in the demo you have lvl4 limit thre is no real point of using then unless you are on lvl 0 or 1 - probobly there will be book for every ability (I found 4 diferent so far and I did not explore half of the island yet)
Bamboo flasks weight less than coconut ones and hold more water plus you dont need rope to make those so i dont bother making coconut ones since sap gathering is still locked

NOTE is there more than 4 cartographer trees on this island? Well even if not as long as there are some rock formations you can get on top you can get some good area for mapping and some thrils like harpy attacks and falling to death in those thorny booshes

It´s the same in reality, you eat few dates and you´re full, same with figs. You have to be really careful with fresh fruit, but dry are really good and also give you a lot. Like if you eating cherries and some other fruit, you gotta be carefull with drinking on them, but dry or sterilized are great. 5: 8 was there a cave? Isn´t it obvious you should make fire on the plates in the cave?

If you want to collect logs better you can make a log cart as well.
