Prince Peter G. Oldenburg came from a distinguished family. He was also a family man, scholar, pianist and composer. He spent fifty years in the service of Russia, for which he was widely respected and was close to Emperor Alexander II. Above all else he was a great philanthropist. One of this great achievements was to setup, in June 1846 an educational institution whose purpose was the education of children unabe to receive an education through their family. These were mainly orphans, without distinction of origin, status or religion.
In 1891 the orphanage was granted the right of state-owned real schools.
