The secret is to hear each mode as its own scale, and not as a subset of the “parent” major scale.
So… play them “out of order” (like in the following order):
Major: Ionian, Lydian (#4), Mixolydian (b7);
Minor: Aolian, Dorian (minor with natural 6), Phrygian (minor with b2).
Diminished: Locrian (rarely used because it’s a Diminished sound with that b5).
Hear each mode “on its own”, without having to relate it back to its major scale “family”.
