This Calculus 1 video we explain how to use the second derivative test to find relative extrema (maxima or minima) for a function. In the second derivative test for maxima and minima, we use critical points from the first derivative test and the sign of the second derivative to determine if a function has a local maximum or a local minimum at x = c. We also explain that sometimes when we use the second derivative test to find local extrema, the test can be inconclusive when the second derivative equals zero.
