Memento Mori: Wisdom Behind Life and Death

In this video, I want to explore a topic that is both uncomfortable and crucial for anyone who wants to live a life of meaning and purpose: mortality. The awareness of our own mortality can be a powerful motivator, a reminder that our time on this earth is limited and that we must use it wisely.

But how do we confront mortality without being overwhelmed by fear and despair? How do we turn this awareness into a source of inspiration and sublime? That's what I want to discuss today, drawing from my own experiences and insights as a writer and student of human nature.

Robert Greene is the author of the New York Times bestsellers The 48 Laws of Power, The Art of Seduction, The 33 Strategies of War, The 50th Law, Mastery, The Laws of Human Nature, and most recently, The Daily Laws.

About that same time, my husband suffered a major brain aneurysm. The best prognosis they had was maybe he'll be a vegetable. Today he is approximately 95% recovered. He's doing great. The one thing that event did do was, . It taught us that there's no such thing as a guarantee that every morning he manages to wake up is a gift.

With the world the way it is, we do struggle to simply appreciate life. That because things are not the way you would like them to be somehow negates the fact that it's still a miracle.

I am grateful. I am honored that I got to come be here, to live here for a time.

We appreciate you speaking on this, Mr. Greene. I know I've experienced more than the average bear when it comes to loved ones passing away, and in my presence. Both my husband and later a fiance both passed away in my arms, in my home. I miscarried my only baby while at home. I've had so many pets and animals pass away, I've lost count. A lot of these loved ones are buried on my land, as I live on acreage in the country. Death is nothing to fear! If anything, the awareness should increase one's love and awe of LIFE. When people share their condolences for me, I never play the victim card. I am so rich to have loved and been loved. And at my age (now 41) I have a musher deeper gratitude for my every single breath and new day to explore and enjoy! Blessings from Austin 🔥

Sir Greene, you're definitely a treasure of mankind, particularly to those who realize your value as a teacher. You put emotion on a great thought and awareness while you explain it with a calm tone of voice, which makes it a memorable wisdom, and a should-be sentiment and mindset while we live.

I am a bi lateral stroke survivor and I have had to face up to the fact that death came close and yet I am still here. Another thing is I found your podcast since I've been in recovery. Thanks for your warmth and wisdom.

Death scares me so much for so long, I am 25 and I think about death almost 24/7 since I was 17. It even have me an anxiety disorder because of it. I’m slowly making it a strength instead of a weakness to think about it, trying to be thankful for everyday instead of fearing that it will one day end. Thank you mr Greene❤️

In one of the samurai films, The Lone Wolf and Cub, the protagonist answers the question of what it is to be a samurai. He says, “The way of the true samurai, is the ability to live through death.” Samurai’s are warriors that has to accept death will come any moment and that you must live your life honorably knowing the end is upon you.

Hi Master Robert, How are you? I hope everything is fine. In this video, I learned that we should appreciate one another and not be shy to show it, as tomorrow is not promised. I am so teary-eyed after watching this, and it made me reflect on what I am doing in my life, like how I am so busy achieving things while the important people in my life are growing old and I barely communicate with them😢. The term "Sense of urgency" have an impact on me. Thank you for your videos, full of good information that we don't get in University's or Schools. You are like, The Best School Professor we didn't have.

Robert, if you're reading this I learned who you are when I came across your interview on Steven Bartlett's Diary of a CEO podcast. I picked up a copy of 48 Laws immediately afterward and became engrossed and enamored by your tales and even here in your videos listening to your wisdom. I just want to say that you truly are one of the brilliant minds of our time just like the greats (and not so great) you mention in your book. Much love and respect to you, friend!
