Yes to keeping your dog on leash! Thank you for giving that example. I can’t tell you how many times dogs have come running up to my dog while their owner yells, “she’s friendly” from a mile away. I always yell back, “Mine’s not!” The problem is that I rescued my dog from a horribly abusive situation and even though his behavior has improved (with lots of work), he’s absolutely terrified and will bite at an unknown dog that comes running toward him just to get the dog to back off. Somehow, I end up looking like the bad owner. Plus, incidents like that just make him even more terrified and set him 10 steps back in his training.

THANK YOU for speaking up for service dogs and their handlers. It got so bad at one point I thought about not training another one and just giving up my independence.

Omg! Yes! Thank you so much for including dogs off of a leash. Just yesterday i was walking my corgi and some lady's dog runs across the busy street (she was fine dw) and sniffed my dog all over while the owner was yelling at her. My dog handled it surprisingly well, before i waited until there was no cars and pushed the dog back across the street. Owner didnt even apologize, and worst thing was my dog got recently attacked TWICE so shes afraid of other dogs. I was more scared than her lol. I had to take a break by a tree later on the walk. I was shaken up but im ok now :)

Omg, other people are the worst influence on my dog. Almost all of my friends and family baby my dog and just let her do whatever she wants when they visit, and if I try to correct her, they get mad at me and tell me to stop bullying her 🤦‍♀

Tha KS for speaking up for service dogs. I actually quit having my dog wear his service dog sign even though he was an approved PTSD service dog.

I firmly believe that the reason I was blessed to have my Snickers, a beautiful Husky, reach the age of 18, was that his weight stayed between 50-55 lbs his entire life. We lost him this past December and even though I know 18 was a long time, I wish I could have him back even for just 1 more day. I think I’ll miss him til the end of my days.
And hey, if you can’t afford more expensive dog food, make them a food topper. I cook chicken livers, sometimes beef livers and whatever other organ meats I can find for them along with bone broth, fruits and vegetables. I don’t cook every day but with 8 dogs, I probably do it at least twice a week. Also, Snickers used to love Caesar salad and taco salad. Anytime you can give dogs extra healthy food, it makes them happy and you’re improving their longevity. Just look up any food items that you might not be sure that it’s safe for dogs.

Yes, to the information about fake service animals and actual animals who have been trained because I have a service animal and sometimes it is difficult to go to certain places because of what others let their untrained animals do while they are supposedly in a vest

Wrapping a treat in a bag and hiding it in a box is a great way to train your dog to rip open the garbage and any boxes they might come across in your closet

Sometimes a dog walks kind of frantically with it's nose on the floor as though he/she is trying to find grass to eat. When the dog does that he/she is sick and if let outside the dog will eat grass. The dog may vomit after eating the grass, and usually seems to feel better after vomiting. I have witnessed this behavior more than once with multiple dogs.

On feeding your puppy or, your dog ., you are looking at the food through human eyes, and that doesn't look like much food, and do a little more won't hurt them. yes it will, portion control is a key of many to keep your puppy or your dog happy and healthy .this video has great information.

Instead of buying freeze dried meats, just buy a dehydrator and do it yourself. You’ll get better quality and it will be cheaper pretty quickly.

Just for the record. Professional training isn't required for it to be a service dog. All that is necessary is for it to be trained to perform a task for you in the event that you aren't able to do it. It's federally regulated that way. They cannot demand you to demonstrate it or about the owners conditions. They can, however, ask what task it is trained to do. Service dog vests aren't required, nor any formal paperwork, at least at the federal level (some states may have imposed it though). It is important to distinct a service dog from an emotional support dog though. They are very different and handled different legally.

The whole 'more exercise' thing is all very well, but when you have a small ex-breeder rescue dog who becomes aggressive around any other dog it sees (so any and all dog parks are out), who has no idea how to play, doesn't know how to fetch and basically can't 'dog', it makes it difficult.

That service dog bit was very appreciated. I tried to train mine to be a service dog and he just can't be invisible for it. He's too social. So I stopped. Changed his harness and all. He still knows all the tricks but I don't take him with me except on walks.

Fake service dogs make my blood boil.

The whole "dogs need scheduled eating times" I think is largely old thinking that many new resources don't say is necessary anymore. The only reason we started taking the bowl away in the late evening is because our dog can be a bit picky and if he's recently gotten some better food he'll start holding out on eating his regular food until he gives in to hunger. The problem is sometimes that's like 1 AM....which isn't a feeding time I want him to get used to so we take the bowl away to enforce that he should be eating his food before sleep time.

Available food doesn't create overfeeding if you simply don't provide them more food than you're supposed to. Just keep a mental count of how many scoops of food you've given the dog. After about a week it pretty much just becomes routine. Also weigh them once in a while to check that their weight is healthy.

Honestly, the best advice I've heard is a healthy dog probably looks slightly skinny to what you expect the dog "should" look like because of how common low exercise/overfed dogs are. It's honestly the same about humans, the whole getting to a healthy weight and your family being concerned that you're starving yourself or something. People's perceptions of a healthy weight are completely skewed.
