Heat Pump Extreme Cold: Tested

Winter is always a concern when using a heat pump as a primary heat source.

This is the 2nd winter test, in 2019 (Minnesota) it finally got cold enough to really see if the heat pump stands up to manufacturer specs!

This is an inverter heat pump with a rated 24,000 btu output, heating around 1,000 square feet. This reviewed unit uses 220V at 10 amps max.

Thanks for watching!

Thank you! I'm looking to replace my entire HVAC system this fall, and I've wanted a heat pump for a decade now. Great to see the technology is finally there!

Lol "Don't tell your grandpa that you keep your heat that high in the winter." Truer Minnesotan words have never been spoken.

Amazing how it finds heat in the cold.

This is a BlueRidge mini-split, rated to -22F, which I installed last year here in Chicago with 4 air-handler units, and I heat 1200sf with a 36, 000 btu compressor connected to two self-contained bedroom units, and two multi-duct units one in the attic & one in the basement, drawing air into the returns from both the floor & ceiling and supplying air from both the floor & the ceiling.

Happy happy: quiet, didn't upgrade my insulation or drafts on my 1967 home, and I have 4 supply vents in the ceiling & 4 supply vents in the floor of 6" insulated round duct with 14" returns.

The attic unit is 12, 000btu and the underfloor unit is 18, 000btu with the bedrooms both at 9, 000btu.

If all run at maximum simultaneously, the 36, 000 BlueRidge compressor can ramp up to 133% if needed!

Works amazing, saving money...

So I just installed 2 senville units in the fingerlakes area. One is a 24 k floor unit, the other is 36 k with 2 12 k heads. So far so good. It has only gotten down to around 15 so far, so hopefully when it gets to 0 it still works. Great video

Any idea what the efficiency is at such low temps? Is it even 100% or is it worse than a space heater?

Good to know, we are thinking about installing one in our bunkhouse in Montana but the cold temperatures have been a concern of ours.

What brand and model heat pump do you have? How many square feet are you heating?

1:08 technically,
an air conditioner does not make cold or heat.
the air conditioner extracts heat from the environment or space with little power.

Dammit... plzzz use Celsius. As everybody in the rest of the world does!
You made a lot of work about it, but the rest of the world just cannot cope with this Fahrenheit thing.

Awesome case study video with the thermal camera, I'm looking to split my home into two zone and using one of these for my second floor, I think you've sold me! Thanks

It's really nice video, but you need to check the power input in watts hour and the power input in BTU's/h so you will know what is the COP of the system in a cold climate, sometimes it will be less efficient compare to other heating sources, see heat pump balance point, thanks.

Nice! Bought an old home and looking to replace the boiler and wonder how well these work in the Midwest. I'm just across the river in St. Paul :)

Minneapolis ain't got crap on northern Minnesota, back in February my thermometer said -42 air temperature. -70s wind chill. Wish we would be as warm as the Minneapolis banana belt!
