Sydney is somewhere we've both wanted to go our whole life!! We were a little disappointed when we realized the Sydney Opera house looked better in pictures than in real life!

It was still a magical place to visit!

We enjoyed visiting the Botanical gardens, Manley beach and seeing street performers.

Reason Sydney Opera House isn't pure white is due to how blinding it would be in full sunshine. It'd be too glarey. Sorry your tour of Sydney was on an overcast day. Sydney is even more stunning under our deep blue skies. Glad you enjoyed yourselves though.

The opera house is not white as for glare. It would have caused all kinds of problems if it was white.

Remember guys, the Opera House was designed in the 60s and built late 60s early 70s, and it was the time that fashion forgot. So yes - beige was actually fashionable in the late 60s early 70s. The main thing about the Opera House though is not so much the beige, but it is an architectural and gravity-defying building masterpiece. The shape more than the colour. :-)

The Opera is a feat of engineering that developed revolutionary building techniques

Letting such a tiny detail like the opera house being beige and not white affect your opinion of it is a little strange tbh. I mean I understand having an expectation but the colour of a building is a weird one to be caught up on.

The Manly ferry has to be one of the greatest public transport trips in the world

Had it been a bright sunny day, the Opera House would have looked whiter and brighter. As for being disappointed with icons, disappointment is always preceded by expectation. And that is why you are never disappointed by good things you never expected.

Forget about the colour of the Opera House - what about the magnificence of the building, the design, the location!!

As a person who was born, grew up, and still lives in Sydney, it’s great to watch other people’s praise for your city to make you appreciate what you often take for granted. I have a favourite little beach in Sydney Harbour that is easily accessible by ferry and is usually deserted. You can lie there on the sand, take in the sun, and watch the boats go by. Simple pleasures in life are often the best...

Sydney is definitely one of my bucket list destinations! This just made me want to visit even more! I'm hoping sometime next year!

The Sydney opera house is off white because if it was all white the glare from the tiles in the bright australian sun would be distracting to shipping in the harbour

You’re the first I’ve seen to be disappointed by the opera house! I’m a local and still in awe every single time I see it in person

You guy's never heard of James Cook before you traveled?

Captain James Cook was credited with finding the best way to prevent ‘Scurvy’, which was an ailment that afflicted sailors on long journeys. Because of his farming background (he worked on a farm as a boy) he knew that a healthy diet required a decent intake of vegetables and fruit and so he insisted that his sailors be fed with both foods, especially citrus fruits. This led to his crew suffering the least number of deaths from Scurvy. The British Navy adopted his dietary rules and because of the large amount of citrus fruits they consumed, American sailors began calling them; ‘Limeys’.

Cook was such an accomplished cartographer that his charts were still being used over a Century after he drew them. An astonishing feat, given the instruments he had at his disposal. His observation of the transit of Venus across the face of the Sun and other scientific observations, were great contributions to science and his charts and mapping of currents and Islands in the Pacific made him a respected seaman to sailors everywhere.

The architecture of the Opera House is so beautiful and unique even if not as white a bit of wear and tear since first opening in 1973. The Sydney Harbour Bridge opened in 1932 so 47 & 88 years respectively ... still great Aussie landmarks.

Sails...sails, which is what the Opera House is designed to look like, are beige....

It would have been kangaroo, laws in Australia are very strict on labelling and selling anything, you are not allowed to say one thing and sell another.

I’m a Sydneysider born and bred now living in regional Victoria, I don’t miss Sydney cause of the crowds but the weather was more tolerable than where I am currently and everything was WAY more convenient to get to! I miss the Asian food markets. I am two hours train trip from Melbourne but I used to live in Southern Sydney past Wolli Creek and had a 20 minute trip to Circular Quay :( I miss it but I can not afford to live there anymore. Sorry that the Opera House was duller than normal, photos are always enhanced or taken when the weather is more optimum! Plus when we have bushfires the ash and smoke clings to the tiles :( I was last at the Opera House to see the band Evanescence for their Synthesis tour, the acoustics was awesome and I wasn’t even in the main amphitheater!
