You could also be fortunate enough to be in a situation where an upgrade is needed for work purposes. In June, I was broadcasting an event where we were a laptop short (two court team handball tournament), and I was able to literally customize the laptop that we needed (work bought it, and I kept it). But, again...that's an extreme situation.

Moving from a gaming laptop to a framework laptop is the biggest upgrade. It lives with you as long as framework supports it

I haven’t seen this mentioned enough in the comments so here goes my little tip:

If possible, try to sell your current laptop before it dies on you, and use the money to up the budget for your new one. I managed to salvage 30% of the original price of my 7-year-old laptop early this year.

And when shopping for the new laptop, if you really want to maximize your value-for-money, I’d suggest buying the previous year’s model. It’s quite surprising (at least to me) how much the price can drop within a year or so. My current laptop is a 2022 model with a 3060 GPU, bought at 65% its launch price.

In my opinion if your laptop is
2020/21 upgrade 2023/24
2022/23 upgrade 2025/(26)
2024 upgrade 2026/27

But it also heavily depends of you laptop specs for example RTX 3050 ain't gonna last as long as 3080. So your budget and laptop choice makes a big impact.

My advice : always buy a mid range gaming laptop, dont overspend, and save for new generation generation upgrade :)

My brand new Lenovo LOQ 15 2024 just suddenly died after 3 month of use. I’ve already contacted with the Lenovo support, and I will keep you guys updated.

My "old" 2021 Legion 7i with a RTX 3080 still going strong and runs everything great... no upgrades needed yet. Hoping in the next year or two I'll replace it when there is some major jump

Originally i bought the Omen 16 with RTX 4080 but returned that simply because i didnt need the performance and the laptop was big and heavy. Instead i got the Legion Slim 14 with rtx4060 and i am super happy with that. Light, portable, handles the games i want to play very well and has a much better OLED screen.

Performance isnt everything especially in laptops.

My laptop (2020 Omen, Ryzen 7 4800H and 2060) is such a fighter that I'm upgrading it just because I want to. After 4 years it's still running at almost stock performance with no physical or functional issues. Love this laptop to death
