How to Unlock Speed Limit | Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser

How to make your electric bike faster by removing the throttle speed limit on the Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser and 500 Series electric bike. This is for most eBike's using the Key-Disp KD21C LCD display. By default the ebike thumb throttle is limited to 20 mph (32 kph), but by following these instructions you can remove that speed limit and enjoy the bike's full speed potential, generally 28-30 mph, without having to pedal. I've also noticed that by changing this setting my bike feels like it has more torque and power to the pedal assist.

To make this change you need to access the Key-Disp's General Parameter Settings by holding both the Up and Down button for a couple of seconds. Then by clicking the Power button, you should access the Speed-limit Settings, labeled "LS". This controls when the speed is faster than the limit set, the ebike power will automatically cut off. The system range can be set from 7.5 mph (12 km/h) to 28 mph (45 km/h). Ride1Up has it set to 20 mph by default.

The display default password is 1212. By clicking the Up/Down buttons you can increase or decrease the speed limit setting, allowing your bike to go faster or slower with the thumb throttle. When done click on the Power button once to confirm your choice, then click and hold the Power button to exit the settings menu.

Keep in mind the higher the setting, the easier it will be to go faster and use more battery power. I found that with the max speed setting being used, my battery life using throttle alone was reduced by 25-30%. Instead of going 20 miles on throttle, I was capable of going about 12-14 miles. Being the settings are pretty easy to do on the fly, you can always reduce or increase settings as needed during your trip. I found that removing the speed limit so I could go faster was nice for short commutes in the city when I wanted to keep pace easier with traffic.

How to use the Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser display:
The display can be switched on and off by holding the MODE button for 2 seconds. When parked for more than 10 minutes, the system will automatically turn off and has a leakage current of less than 1 uA. The display interface shows Running Speed and Total Distance, and pressing the MODE button allows the user to cycle through various information such as Trip Distance, Trip Time, Max Speed, Average Speed, Motor Power and Running Speed.

The push-assistance mode can be activated by holding the DOWN button, which will cause the eBike to move at a uniform speed of 6 Km/h, with "P" displayed on the screen. The push-assistance function is turned off when the DOWN button is released. It's important to note that the push-assistance function should only be used while pushing the eBike and that there is a danger of injury if the wheels of the eBike do not have ground contact while using this function.

The lighting on the eBike, including the display backlight and headlight, can be turned on by holding the UP button for 2 seconds. The lighting can be turned off by holding the UP button for 2 seconds again.

The assistance level on the eBike can be adjusted to indicate the output power of the motor. The default level is "1" and ranges from "0" to "5", with "0" being no power and "5" being the maximum power. To change the assistance level, press the UP or DOWN button to increase or decrease the level until the desired level is displayed on the interface.

The battery indicator on the eBike displays the capacity of the battery using five bars. When the battery is low, the battery frame will flash to indicate that it needs to be recharged immediately.

The trip distance clearance (TC) on the eBike can be cleared by pressing the UP or DOWN button to choose "Y" or "N". The default setting is "N". To save a changed setting, press the MODE button and then access backlight contrast settings.

The backlight contrast settings on the eBike can be modified by pressing the UP or DOWN button to increase or decrease the brightness level, which ranges from "1" (low) to "3" (high). The default setting is "1". To save a changed setting, press the MODE button and then access unit Conversion Settings.

The eBike's unit settings can be changed to kilometers or miles by pressing the UP or DOWN button to increase or decrease the value. The default setting is "2" which is kilometers. To save a changed setting, press the MODE button and then access trip distance clearance settings. To exit general settings, hold the MODE button for 2 seconds.

Thank you this made me fall in love with my cafe cruiser all over again! I actually seem to get just as good energy efficiency riding throttle only, though I don’t press it down the whole time I kind of pulse it, throttle for a few seconds and then coast for a moment then more throttle

I bought the Core 5 over the Velotric Discovery 1 specifically for this. I likely wont ever do over 15mph on my route but it's nice to not be restricted.

Interesting, I didn't realize it tops the throttle only to 26mph from the default of 20mph. Will have to give this a try on my way home!

I have Jansno X50 750 watt rated bike. It was limited by a wire under the seat near the controller. They even had it in the instructions for you to unhook the black wire and that opened mine up. Mine has that screen but I don't think that would work the same on mine. Mine will go about 28mph with my fat butt on it.

I just bought this bike but it’s on back order. How are you liking it? Also thanks for the info!

Cool guide. How much does this affect the range of the bike? I assume this means more power use and therefore means it burns through the battery faster? I’m generally going pretty long distance but would love to keep my speed up over range.

I have the same motor and display in my Core 5 and tried this hack. My setting was already at 45 so I bumped to 50 (max allowed) and saw no change in throttle limit (22mph). Just got my bike 2 weeks ago so maybe this doesn't work anymore.
