Fun fact: When the Brooklyn Bridge was built in 1873 it was built upon caissons sank 78' down. Employing 600 workers. "Caissons Disease" took the lives of 14 men and 119 were diagnosed with what we know today as Decompression sickness DCS. SCUBA Divers know as the "Bends".

They dig out the inside and the caisson drops on its own. Circular is much stronger.

Brunel's Rotherhithe Tunnel had a 50-foot diameter Ventilation shaft, which was started in 1825 and utilised a steel ring upon which a 3' brick, circular wall was constructed. The weight of the brick wall pushed the steel ring further down into the clay which was dug out by hand.
