China imposes sanctions on seven Taiwanese officials

The US has slammed Beijing's recent decision to fire missiles over the island, calling China a "gorilla in the room" that must be contested. Meanwhile, Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghe said the People's Liberation Army has never been afraid of any enemy, and that China is confident it will defeat all enemies as it safeguards its sovereignty. Beijing has launched a fresh series of military drills around Taiwan, after more US lawmakers visited the island.
