Dude the voice added so much more to the character than the character himself, he could be off screen and just hearing him say "you have failed me for the last time" would be enough to send a shiver up the spine of any fan.

It's not mutually exclusive.

He saw his voice work as "special effects", and even when the movie proved successful, and ESB was made, he still refused to get credited for that one.

But it is also true that pretty much everyone involved in the production thought the movie would be a flop.
