As a 68 year old white man, I used to think Colin Kappernick was wrong to kneel during the National Anthem. I now feel differently, if I can show that I am committed to understand better the true feelings of pain of the black community, then I am willing to kneel. If I can show that I am now committed to seeing people different from me in their true light, then I am willing to kneel. If I can show that I now get it, then I am willing to kneel. I’m reminded of that great painting of George Washington, kneeling at Valley Forge, praying for our country. I’m now willing to kneel in solidarity with Black Americans in this struggle. It’s not in defiance of our national anthem, it’s in rejoicing in the hopeful culmination that our Anthem proclaims, Land of the free, home of the Brave.

Everyone needs to listen to you. I’m from the south, was a child in Memphis when Dr. King was assassinated. I’m heartbroken that in 2020 the same hatred exists. I feel I won’t live long enough to ever see love conquer this hate. I’ll never understand the attitude of how anyone thinks they are better than someone else because of skin color.
