Why is the Netherlands disappearing underwater?

Here’s why the Netherlands may have disappeared a long time ago if it wasn’t for their clever engineering.

Because the majority of the Netherlands lies below sea level, they have spent years constructing large-scale sea defenses to push back water and protect themselves from calamities. They've been fairly effective at it, reclaiming over 20% of their territory from the sea and lakes. How did they pull it off? Watch our video to find out.

As a Dutchmen, i am sure that it won´t be 65% of the land under water! The majority of the land is still above sea level, so how can it be 65 %?Outside the polders there is land above the sea level, only crossed by a river. So the land beside the river can only be in water when the river is very high, but then only the sides off the river will be wet.

Southwestern Vancouver was once a swamp and polder until it was all filled in. It's considered the most dangerous part of Vancouver should an earthquake and tsunami strike. Most of the newer buildings have very deep reinforced concrete piles just to insure the buildings are not uprooted when the polder liquified in an earthquake.

The Netherlands needs to raise their lands more than dams, but to do this by dumping soil with trucks is not durable and takes a long time. That's why my opinion is that the Netherlands should be prepared for a big project. The project should create artificial volcanic eruptions and allow cities to raise land. Lava will cover the country's land like a blanket. Of course, the regions where this will be done must be transferred. It's not easy, but it came to my mind as the healthiest method.

If the Netherlands wants to save its land then the Dutch government should plant as many native trees in their country as possible. The trees take water from the land and hold the land firmly by their roots. There is no better natural way than mangroves to save the land lost in the sea, and the Netherlands will have to import sand from Arab countries. At least one thousand tons of sand should be imported to the Netherlands every year in large ships and coconut trees should be planted on the shores of the Netherlands.

(Suggestion from Pakistan)
