A woman who is ancestrally part Gullah Geechee (a group of people originally from the Sierra Leone region in western Africa) was found to be the nearest relative to mitochondrial Eve (FYI for anyone reading the comments).

The confusion that people experience, I believe, is that of the Biblical Adam and Eve ("the first man and woman"). Mitochondrial eve is not the first human female, but only the most recent one with whom all humans alive today share a common ancestor. Likewise for Y-chromosome Adam.

As for when the first human man or woman existed, that will always be impossible to know exactly, but we DO KNOW that they descended from creatures that were neither human nor chimpanzee but something in between. There are something like 250, 000 generations separating us from chimps and this gradual evolution happened 5-7 million years ago. That means many men and women lived and died before mitochondrial eve and y-chromosome adam.

I love your work but I have to say... Y-Chromosome Adam(actually Noah) & Mitochondrial Eve don't go back 150, 000 years...
the mutation rate they use is the phylogenetic rate (which is assumed because EvOlUTioN rEal, DuH!!! )

But if you use the OBSERVED pedigree rate (calculated by lining up as many direct ancestors e.g. daughter, mother, grandma, great grandma etc), Adam & Eve land at "...an age of only of 6, 500 years..."

What they've done now with recent papers is they've gotten slicker & instead of putting out an actual age (always <10, 000 years), they just say the pedigree rate is way too fast than the phylogenetic rate – they need it slow so that they can have their 150, 000-year dates

They toss out anything that doesn't conform to their story.

This is exactly what they did with Eve... they first got the 6, 500 years but then tossed it out because they already believed humans to be much older & so they made up & justified the phylogenetic rate

I know you're an old-earther but, God put Adam & Eve's proof in our genetics & even gave us a literal clock...

This is difficult to watch, this guy has his information all twisted. mt-EVE and Y-Adam did not live during the same time, they were thousands of years apart, and no, mt-Eve does not change as you go backward in time, nor was she "the" mother of us all. She was "A" mother to us all. We all have thousands of mothers, and ancestral "slots" begin to overlap around our 6th Great-Grandparents. This is pedigree collapse. So, mt-Eve is not only a mother to us all, she is a mother of many of our branches, as are the other mothers we have ever increasingly the farther back in time we go. This guy is a lunatic.

To say all females' mitochondria trace back to one women is WRONG. Also it is wrong to say that X cannot pass through male. Female has two Xs, one is from her mother's mother, the other is from her father's mother. It diverges, not converges. The graph shown at 6:33 is misleading because that is only one X that traces to one woman. This articular group could be wiped out completely; the other groups (with X inherited from the fathers) are probabilistically more dominant which trace back to more and more DIFFERENT woman. My point is, unless we study almost all women's mitochondria and the evidence shows there is one female ancestor (this is possible if we are descendants from a very small ancient group), the genetic mechanism only leads to many many different female ancestors.
