I like the "Legacy" word: the more and more I learn about Tesla (or Lucid btw), it seems for me they are redefining what is an automaker and what is a car.

Thanks Viking, good reporting. First thing they need to do is to hire a new CTO with very strong software dev background and let him/her restructure their approach. I may just start developing a system for Toyota later this week and sell it to them in 2024 when Arene fails. :)

The Toyota keyfob issue has already been recalled as mostly a software error, where functions were tied to the existence of a subscription account that weren't supposed to be tied to it. Also, we're unfortunately going to see more of these things in the future, as Tesla, Mercedes and others have openly talked about or started already to sell features as subscriptions instead of pay-once options.
The idea of licensing their software out at this point sounds just like a phrase to make shareholders happy.. everyone in their engineering knows how far they are behind and that they have nothing to offer that anyone might want to license

I own a 2020 Toyota Tacoma and the GPS navigation is trash..Took it to the dealer and was told I needed an update and it wasn't free

Usually when car makers try and create their own proprietary software, it ends up sucking right from the start. Toyota is soooo far behind and lacking in any meaningful expertise in this field that really it should surely just try and licence or acquire the software? As Sam points out it is just another revelation of how out of step Toyota is! 🤦🏽‍♂️

As good as Tesla's software is, I sure wish they would add support for Apple Car Play and Android Auto. I listen to audiobooks and podcasts outside my car, as well as use other apps, and not being able to use those apps in the Tesla is a big negative, almost a dealbreaker.

Toyota now have largest sale of cars in US and I had one from 2003 until just recently and now have a Honda my son handed down to me . I am a Melbourne Australian Expatriate living in Ottawa Canada and will probably get an a Electric car in a couple of years when I expect there will be adequate charging stations around. It will be a Toyota as I’m sure there will be one. Enjoy your presentations so look fwd to seeing them. Keith Walker.

For the record, my last 4 cars were Acura's. But I am a huge supporter of Elon, I did pre-ordered Cyber Truck and I truly hope Tesla will become number 1 auto maker in the world.. Having stated so, people that run Toyota are not stupid. Didnt Toyota partner up Tesla several years ago to help with California regulations? Didn't Toyota partner up with BMW to produce Supra? As an example, didn't Toyota partnerr up with Suburu to develop an Electric SUV? Don't you think Toyota has solid electric car knowledge from making all those hybrids? So all they. need to do is partner up with a software company like Apple or Google. I just can't believe that Japanese car makers will surrender so easily. Certainly Sandy Munro thinks very highly of Toyotas ability to adept to changes.

I think Toyota are more like 15 years behind where they should be. The most notable feature of toyota is how very complacent the company is.
The dealerships I have visited have gone down that path with them.

Japan has a critical shortage of IT engineers. By 2030 there will be a shortage of 800, 000 software engineers, due to its aging population. However Japanese society is fairly closed to outsiders. They will be forced to outsource more of this work.
