Companies don't exist to provide jobs, they exist to provide goods and/or services to consumers. Cry me a river, Toyota.

I feel bad for the blacksmiths from the horse and cart days. Don't hear Toyota shedding a tear for them.

I think they mean mismanagement at Toyota will cause job losses

This was well known a decade ago. Why didn't they do something about it instead of lie about demand.

Makes me remember this story

While traveling by car during one of his many overseas travels, Professor Milton Friedman spotted scores of road builders moving earth with shovels instead of modern machinery. When he asked why powerful equipment wasn’t used instead of so many laborers, his host told him it was to keep employment high in the construction industry. If they used tractors or modern road building equipment, fewer people would have jobs was his host’s logic.

“Then instead of shovels, why don’t you give them spoons and create even more jobs?” Friedman inquired.

My wife owned a new Mercedes. We had to sell it because they kept trying to sell us more “maintenance” it was crazy. Car was in perfect condition. If we didn’t buy there stupid plans they would treat us like garbage. So we sold it and bought a Hyundai. Hasn’t costed us a dime in two years.

People who hangs on to the past will certainly lose the future. Akio is such a man.

Because of Toyota not moving into the future, millions of jobs will be lost in Japan.

70 yr old here….just bought my 1st EV …TESLA 3LR…love it! No haggling at dealership, easy to charge, no maintenance…so easy! I wish more boomers would not fear EV technology

It didn’t have to be that way. Japanese automakers could have embraced the transition to EVs instead of trying to stop it.

Because they didn’t invest correctly in EVs, they could have 5 years ago!

Toyota's comments do in fact have a basis in history. Up until the middle 1950's the worlds automotive power houses were Britian and the USA. The entry into the automotive industry by Japan all but destroyed the British industry and made a very substantial dent into the US industry. The primary reasons for their success was much lower labor costs, changing technology and a huge investment in research. The irony is that the same thing is happening right now with Japan being the victim and China gaining the new crown

When I was studying my undergraduate business degree in the early 90s, Japan’s management style was applauded for being long range rather than the Western style that merely looked at maximizing short term profits often at the expense of long term profits. Unfortunately, Japan had their opportunity to get ahead of the world with EVs in the last 15 years but refused. The foreign Chairman of Nissan did his best with the Leaf, but was sent packing. Toyota has spent decades developing a massive dealership and service network worldwide and EVs just don’t need that unnecessary and expensive system. They have buried themselves in the old school system and it will end them within the next 20 years.

He should the honorable thing and get in front of his country's citizens and apologize for screwing up. He should be ashamed.

Yes indeed, what he says is true. Did Toyota feel a social responsibility to American workers when American consumers preferred Toyotas over GM and Ford? Did Toyota management miss the EV boat when they clung to hydrogen cars? Why did Toyota decide to use BYD's power train for hybrids? Why is Toyota's executive bemoaning his misguided leadership and blaming China for the decline of the Japanese auto industry? Did Japan miss the boat on EV?

Electric motors have 1 moving part. Less labor, less materials. Way easier to build.

These people should have been switching to electric about a decade ago and then there wouldn't be job losses. Look how far electric cars have come in the last 20 yrs! Just think if everyone was focusing on them how much further along we would be.
