I really hope Toyota doesn’t lose their way in the process of this. They must remember what got them their loyal customer base. Reliability!

My outdated 25 yr old Camry is advanced enough to still get me home.

I find it hard to believe this is the first time they got hands on a model Y

I find it really hard to believe that the biggest automotive manufacturer in the world would not only get to teardown of the leading EV manufacturer's vehicle today and not years ago, but also openly admire the competitor's tech.

This is a REALLY good thing. It means Toyota top engineers aren't complacent and recognize the need for improvement and innovation.

Guys remember, Toyota is very conservative and are very incremental in their quality analysis before coming out. They always knew Tesla technology but needed to have a dedicated EV platform to produce quality EV vehicles. Great job Kirk, always the best.

Toyota as other Japanese Automakers needs to do what they did in the 60's and 70's, copy the best sellers, and make it better.

It took a teardown to make them realize the complacency. It is bewildering.

I honestly think hybrids are the best way to go. Full EVs are completely reliant on the power grid, which can be switched off and controlled easily by the powers-that-be. I love the autonomy of hybrids, with their increased power, efficiency, and fun without the full reliance on the (already outdated/stressed) power grid.

Hi Kirk, greetings from the U.K. I love America, I worked in Maryland back in the 1990’s and have visited the US many times. They say ‘what goes around, comes around’. Fascinating that in the 1970s the American auto market was disrupted by the Japanese invasion by Toyota, Datsun, Mazda etc. it looks like the tables are turning, and these Japanese companies are about to be disrupted by Tesla - an American car company. Nothing against Toyota, I always recommend them to anyone looking for a robust, if boring car. Tesla here in Europe is doing amazingly well, and with good reason, petrol (gas) prices here in the U.K. are around 8 USD a gallon, and Tesla has established a reputation for quality and reliability - probably because the early production cars were never sold here, back when Tesla was still working out how to build quality at scale.

What makes me surprised is that why didn’t Toyota not tear up a Tesla beforehand when the development for the BZ4X or other Bz vehicles started?

The RZ is already "Outdated"...Dang Kirk. Makes me want to run out and go buy one right now. Heck, it's a Classic already before the 1st sale.

The custom IDRA+Tesla Casting machines really saved Tesla's ass. A ramped Tesla Gigafactory can profitable sell Model Y's for around $38K, I look forward to the day that Toyota can compete with a $38K Model Y. Imagine being able to buy a Model Y for $32K in the USA (After tax credit), that would cause some serious disruption.

When Toyota does it, I'm sure their bumpers won't fall off and won't have a recall on every model they make.

I never thought I would see usa school the Japanese on cars. It's a throwback to the 60s.

Great work. We have all been saying this for the last 5 yrs and it's great to hear it from Toyota itself.

Another big challenge Toyota needs to recognize is vertical integration in Tesla. Tesla brings most of their manufacturing in house. This significantly cuts costs both in software and hardware.

I am not a Tesla fanboy, but I can tell you Model 3 Performance is one of the best cars I have ever driven in my life.

So Akio Toyoda was literally asleep at the wheel when it came to EVs
