I'm sure the first manned mission to Mars will happen relatively soon, but I do wonder whether anything will come out of it. Humanity reached the moon decades ago but we still can't stay there for more than a few days. Considering Mars is even further away and a much more hostile environment, a permanent Mars base seems improbable in the next 2-3 decades.
