Xi's Three Battles: China's Anti-Poverty Campaign

Please join the Freeman Chair in China Studies for a discussion of poverty alleviation in China. At the December 2017 Central Economic Work Conference, Chinese policymakers decided that China would focus on fighting three tough battles to achieve high quality development in the next three years, among them reducing rural and urban poverty. This event features experts who will discuss the political, economic, and social aspects of addressing poverty. Georgetown University Professor Kristen Looney, Lead Economist for the World Bank's Development Research Group John Giles, and Director of the Grassroots Initiative at Johns Hopkins SAIS Anne Thurston will discuss China's trends in poverty and economic development, policy implementation for poverty alleviation, the demographic challenges to China's development, and the roles of NGOs in China's community development. Scott Kennedy, Deputy Director of the Freeman Chair in China Studies, will moderate the discussion.

The China Reality Check Series presents perspectives from academia, industry, and government in order to promote a sustained dialogue on critical and insufficiently understood issues related to China's reemergence as a global power.

Why not concentrate on the USA and start some project to eliminate poverty, injustice, income disparity, unjust economic systems, starting community based cooperatives, universal health care, free tuition and many more, just pick one and do something. The whole we irld will benefit and emulate. Easy to criticise and hard to do.

Looney definitely did her homework, therefore offered objective assessment on China’s last 30 plus years effort of fighting poverties, good or bad. The old lady Ann T in the other hand went to China with a political agenda trying to smear the Chinese government for mistreating Tibetan minorities. The reality is you get preferential treatment by the government if you belong to any ethnic minorities, just opposite of how minorities are treated in the US. Whoever funded her trips to China, should feel shamed for her misuse of the money, unless that’s exactly their agenda too in the first place

work on your own b/s poverty extremes in America instead of looking at how China fares K with alleviating poverty. In New Zealand each govt has these poverty policies that are never put in place and the ones that are, seem to favor the well off or the "get rich schemers". New Zealand abuses the indigenous race "Maori land for their own capital gains" while leaving Maori on the poverty line of unemployed" Land laws constituted by a colonial govt an legislation.
